Topic: Are Beatles Prog? Posted: November 25 2005 at 13:08 |
They sure are proggier than the Monkeys. They are not 1/3 as prog as Caravan, despite Caravanīs prog sucks.

What about Sgt Pepper? The period between Sgt Pepper and Rubber Soul when they were all whacked out on drugs and made 2 very proggy albums with out them you wouldnt have King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Hawkwind etc who started in the psychdelic pop then went on to evolve that into prog rock.

Why does anybody who wasn't around when they were, like them? I know i don't... and I don't think of them as prog either.
Glad i got that of my chest

Wow, say what you really mean!!!
I must say I agree with you though. To say "Experimental / Inventive = No" for The Beatles is just so wrong. Obviously he's never heard Tomorrow Never Knows, Revolution #9, I Am The Walrus etc etc.

The Beatles was my favorite group for a long time and i know all their album songs. These in my opinion are really prog :
I am the Warlus
A day in a life
Strawberry fields
Dear Prudence
Revoliution 9
Savoy Truffle
Because
I want you(she's so heavy)
and maybe there are some more

That is SO wrong - you cannot compare The Beatles to The Monkees. "Just a 60s pop band", I think not. I can name Yes, Genesis and Gentle Giant as 3 prog bands influenced by The Beatles and there are certainly others.
I need to go and lie down in a dark room now.

I voted NO, even though they influenced a lot of Prog and Rock bands.

Time to resurrect this old chestnut - not as prog, but prog-related (ie, not the early stuff, but later...)?

In some ways and on some albums there's some moments of "progishness", so I say NO they're not prog

i would say looking at it purely from what the word "progressive" means most definatly as they did open up many avenues for "rock" bands to travel along

Beatles are only progressive in looks (well, in that age anyway...) but progressive in music,...
It's safer to say that Elvis' music was progressive.

The beatles may have dabbed in Psychadelic music, but never in Prog. Even though some think Sgt Peppers was a concept album, it hardly can be said that it is Prog. The later Beatles as well as the stones in 69 did the psychadelic stuff...for that matter the stones proably were more Prog inclined than the Beatles...
Like a rainbow or Lady Jane etc. I think if Brian Jones had his way he would have gone Prog...unfortunately he ended up face down in a swimming pool.
