Topic: Portnoy Justified? Posted: April 06 2006 at 20:32 |
I have a gut feeling that their tiff maybe isnīt even related to music at all. Maybe it is political differences.

Portnoy is of course justified! He's a nice guy, but then again Tate is an egoistic bitch anyways. So why say the obvious?

A hugely talented drummer but as a person he has much to learn.

On the contrary, Mike Portnoy is one of the nicest guys you can meet. Roine Stolt has said that Portnoy would never say a bad word about anyone.

Perhaps now (meaning before this incident) but I'd have watched what I said to him in the late 80s/early 90s. I might get the sh*t kicked out of me by a metal drummer in a drunken stupor! ![](smileys/smiley18.gif) ![](smileys/smiley36.gif)

no votes ... the comments are unnecessary (uncalled for), but if it is true what he said about Tate, then why shouldn't he respond in the same way - that's his prerogative.

Coming from a direct outsider, it's difficult to fanthom absolute
justice among the circumstances at hand, though, it seems to me Portnoy
had enough reasons so as to retaliate on Tate's apparently continuous
offences and regardless of how elegant it'd be to stand above a
hypothetically drawn line of probity and polite elocution, Portnoy is
still emotionally humane and not that much of an adept to stoicism, it
seems. Of course, words could have parted differently from his urge to
rightful expression, but, even overlooking the fact not all detain the
most of self-control or unconditional eagerness to please the public,
there wouldn't be that many to consider indulging lenient remonstrances
as to how insidious one person can be to imbibe anger from, as
musicians and celebrities are still and will always be humans,
susceptible to commit about the same mistakes in judgement and contract
similar emotions as the least popular crowd.

I'm not fussed.
While it smacks of your generic poprock feuds, Tate was sh*tting all over the line. I think the fact that Mike waited so long before he said anything is a good thing. Besides, it's not like he payed out on the whole band, he just said those things about Tate, and in retaliation, not out of nowhere.
So, while it may have been immature of him, you have to realise that people are going to be themselves. Imagine if he just let Tate spit all over him and DT in the media for the next few months. Years maybe. I think he's justified because he's defending himself and the band.
That's my 2 cents anyway. Won't stop me listening to them, or buying the new DVD.

The only way he's gonna get justice is by getting Chris Jericho to body slam Geoff Tate.

Maybe it was a little out of control, but when someone talks about you in a bad manner you have every right to stand up for yourself. I just don't know if calling him a "2-faced douchebag" helped his case at all.

Geoff Tate was outright lying that he had never heard of DT before
their tour, which is incredibly naive and just plain false. Would
Q tour with a band their singer had never heard before? I don't
think so.
This goes back a few years...and it's fairly well-known that Geoff Tate
is a dickhead. If I were MP, I'd have done much worse.
However, I don't really care what MP said or what Tate said. I
think the new Q album is far better than the most recent DT
album. However, I do know that MP is extremely outgoing and
hardworking and will bust his ass to meet and talk to as many people as
he can whereas Tate has been known to be rude to fans and avoidant.

On the contrary, Mike Portnoy is one of the nicest guys you can meet. Roine Stolt has said that Portnoy would never say a bad word about anyone. Obviously with this recent episode with Geoff Tate, Portnoy has sad a bad word about someone. What Tate was doing to Dream Theater was terrible, but that doesn't mean Portnoy should have responded the way he did.
As always I hate it when musicians put down other musicians publicly. Therefore, I'm going to vote that this is not justified. I would like to say given Mike Portnoy's reputation as such a nice guy, I'm going to say as unjustified as I may think this is, Geoff Tate is even worse provoking such a known nice guy.

Portnoy should form a band with Sebastian Bach. The resulting
loudmouthed-ego-barfing antimatter explosion would be deafening.

Agreed. There were plenty of other, more mature ways to have handled it.

That's where I'm at. Not enough info. I'll also agree with Jody about
Portnoy's ego. He appears to have difficulty keeping it in check, from
what I've heard.

After scanning the forum, it appears that Tate really badmouthed DT and
Mike personally on some radio show. In a follow up post Mike said
he had respect for other members of QR (and even counted them as
friends), but said he couldn't stay silent about Geoff anymore and was
sick of his crap.
So I guess he could have continued to take the high road, but he didn't
and posted his frustration on his own forum/website. I wouldn't
call this unacceptable. Don't know if it's truly justified
because I don't know what Tate said. But Mike is known to give
his opinions and not give a s--- about what people think about it.

After reading what Portnoy had to say I think it's definitely justified. If Tate is
insulting Dream Theater and Portnoy numerous amounts of times than his
comments weren't justified to begin with. Portnoy is just letting something
out due to his anger. It's probably not the best thing to do (and he is doing
it in an immature way) but it is justified.
He could've easilly said it more professional such as "Due to Mr. Tate
continual critisms of Dream Theater and myself personally, I have lost all
respect that I once had for him."
