^ Aha! See, I personally LOVE that line. It leads my imagination to run wild. Some people's brains are just wired differently. You must be more "left brained" than I, or more "bothered" by a lack of logic.

You're probably better at math than I am, though!

That's a lot of extrapolation from very few sources that I find to be shaky at best.
You still haven't explained how that line makes any sense whatsoever.

It doesn't have to make literal sense, but it bothers me when it sounds like the lyricist is just picking random words, because it sounds like he's being incredibly lazy. I also don't like lots of symbols and things like that because I seem to be really bad at interpreting them since I take lots of things literally. For example, the line "You radiate cold shafts of broken glass." on Pigs 3 Different Ones confused me; what the hell is a shaft of broken glass? Eventually someone sort of explained it and I figured it out, but maybe that will help you understand why these things bother me so much.

That is a crapload of extrapolation that, IMO, is shaky at best.

I really like Frances -- but maybe, just maybe there are a couple of points at which they should cut the noise down just a bit...

That albums is ok; the "noise" is not random noise, is a part of the overall layout of that album. In fact, ther are times in wich I wonder ¿what would happen if they one day decide to just work with those abstract compositions, and leave melodic tonal composition aside?... I would definitively go for that...

Hmm... not sure I buy into this. It seems like an awful lot of extrapolation from a limited number of sources, IMO...

I recall some earlier threads where songs on Close to the Edge bothered him for precisely this reason.

1) ^^ That's because you DON'T Understand the album
2) Is 25 wives, not 17
3) Ghandi you can register yourself and learn a little more: http://www.thecomatorium.com/ of FTM
3) Thanks Yeppp for the support

Eh, I was going on memory, and I listened to FTM about 6 months ago when I borrowed it from the library. In any case, I refuse to believe that it's 25 and not 17 makes any difference whatsoever for the meaning. They were just making stuff up. Unless, of course, they explain it all somewhere, which seems unlike them.

Ok great, you guys made an album about a stranger's journal. But why are you writing lyrics that, don't make sense if we haven't seen the journal! That is, if they even make sense at all. For example, I found this website (it's an archive because the original went down) which trys to explain Kid A's and Amnesiac's crazy lyrics. So it turns out that Kid A is almost ridiculously allusive to books that I've never heard of and are not all that famous, like House of Leaves, or events in their life which I have no reason to know about, like this: http://web.archive.org/web/20040106133324/www.sas.upenn.edu/ ~adrivera/pp67.html

I didn't see anything on that forum that shed any light on FTM; so please tell me, How does that line make any sense whatsoever? Or you can give me a link to masterpage that explains it all if you don't want to type up a long explanation.

Scab Dates is my first and last TMV album

And a very bad introduction to the band at that.

Thats why.

I nearly fell from my seat when i heard the introduction

Yea, that is  poor introduction to them. I highly recommend you check out a studio album.

"They should cut down a little bit, just a little bit"

Mainly the ending to The Widow is simply annoying . On the other hand there are also sound effects that I do like  e.g. the ending of #1 on Frances the Mute.

I dont understand all that talking about " Frances the mute is way too noisy " !! I think it's perfect with all it's noise and ambience !! FTM is so much better than De loused, much more complex and more intresting song structures.. also the lyrics really developed !! De loused lyrics were good too but a little bit too Scifi to me.. Anyway Mars Volta is one of my favourite Prog bands nowdays and they deserve the hype !

No-one complained when Pink Floyd used all those noises on Dark Side of the Moon... (as far as I know)... and there are a noise parts in a lot of songs like:

Rush - 2112 (wind sounds at the beginning)

King Crimson - Exiles (also sort of wind sounds, and also at the beginning)

King Crimson - 21st century schizoid man (at the beginning)

... and of course Yes - Close to the Edge, the bird sounds such.

Just to throw us all for a loop, maybe the Mars Volta should release an album with JUST noise on it.

Are those people who dont like the "noise" sections the same ones who complain about "silent sorrow in empty boats" from Genesis' Lamb or "Ions" or "Intermission" from Tool's Aenima etc.I dont mind these type of filler pieces and they set the mood in FTM.In fact these noise sections work out very well live and allow the band members to extend in a jazz/fusion sort of way.
