There have been hundreds of female progressive rock vocalists over the
years, in countries from Liechtenstein to Panama. A good browse around
this site should reveal plenty of bands to try.

I agree about Annie Haslam and Reinassance. A definite must. Mostly Autumn as well. And I see that Aries and Curved Air have been already mentioned.

Maybe you should also check out bands like Stream of Passion, White Willow, The 3rd and the Mortal or In the Woods. They all have really great female vocalists.

What about Babe Ruth! Strangely one of there tracks was a favourite of Grandmasterflash! Apparently they're getting back together!?

Orrrrr (blatent plug) you could check out my band, we're a female fronted prog/rock outfit. I'm trying to get the prog community behind us! Some of us studied jazz but we're also heavily influenced by A Perfect Circle, Primus, The Mars Volta etc. Anyways check us out at www.karvacheckpoint.com.

Essential bands with female singers:

Mostly Autumn - Heather Findlay sings like an angel and looks like one too. Try The Spirit of Autumn Past and The Last Bright Light. Even better, see them live, when Olivia Sparnenn joins them - she also looks wonderful and can sing brilliantly. You won't be diappointed either way. Mellow complex rock with folk and Celtic overtones; delicious!

Renaissance - Annie Haslam is wonderful. Try Turn of the Cards, Scheherazade and Other Short Stories and Ashes Are Burning and the wonderful Live at Carnegie Hall.

Mostly Autumn is a mellow and tender sound of folk prog band with male and female vocals. I suggest you go and get The last bright light album.

Another good group (but not 100% prog, its labeled "post-pop" instead of "post-rock") Superaquello witch has a male and female vocals also  i suggest you go and get La emergencia. Its a very enjoyable and uplifting band.

And of course Renaisance and the album Ashes are burning for a good place to start.

all very good bands with female vocalist

what kind of female vocals would you prefer? a real shouter? then you have to try Catapilla. Anna Meek is the wildest female vocalist of all (except for my wife, who even beats Anna Meek)
