OK IT'S THE SAME AS IF WE TAKE THE TOPIC ABOUT LED ZEP'S MUSIC, BLACK SABBATH'S MUSIC OR MAYBE PINK FLOYD'S MUSIC...I HAVE READ THOSE BOOKS ABOUT THE MESSAGE BEHIND THE MUSIC AND BELIEVE ME ONE DAY I SLEPT HEARING STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN BY ONE MONTH OR BEING MORE EXACT THE LED ZEPPELIN IV AND I'M THE SAME GUY WITHOUT ANY CHANGE IN MY PERSONALITY SINCE SOME EXPERTS HAD SAID THAT THOSE MESSAGES AFFECT YOUR SUBCONSCIOUSNESS.... I DON'T KNOW... RUSH MUSIC IS GREAT AND I KNEW ABOUT THOSE KIND OF THEORIES ABOUT THE LYRICS (GOOD RESEARCHING THOUGH) BUT I REALLY DOESN'T AFFECT TO ME...AND FOR ME IT'S ANOTHER LINE ON THE TIGER'S SKIN
Democracy=A form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people...

jiggajake:

Cesar is right. Whether or not they took drugs is not the point. Its irrelevant. But to find a drug influence a connection in almost ever song they wrote is ridiculous.

This guy must be so spaced out himself, and he must have a genuine fear of rock music, or Canadians

But that's not the point, all things considered. 'Free Will' is a song about... free will, as opposed to taking refuge in any kind of paternalism so ona can avoid the most important issues concerning thinking and full responsibility. 'Entre Nous' is a song about a relationship on the rocks. 'Witch Hunt' critizices intolerance, 'Red Barchetta' celebrates the free sexuality of the 60s rock'n'rollers, 'The Trees' is a fable about envy and oblivion, 'Closer to teh Heart' is simply an optimistic hymn to the strong potential of will power in society and the individual. What about 'Nobody's Hereo'? Is it about people dying of AIDS or ego death? - I'd like to see that!!!

Subjects in lyrics are sometimes so easy to find, despite the fact that the writer uses smart words. This guy looked for LSD and egodeath, and found it almost anywhere. Just as Tippi Gore and her friends were looking for violence, drug mentions and sadomasochism in the 15 Filthy, and that they did.

regards.

Consider "Grace Under Pressure" -- same idea. How to retain poise during ego death and the psychotimemetic state, without freaking out?

Often wondered about that myself

Freewill

This is a profoundly ambiguous song just as pre-enlightenment naive freewill only appears to be the same as post-enlightenment transcendent freedom.  Naive freewill is ignorant of determinism; enlightened freedom magically and miraculously transcends cosmic determinism, thus Christian ideas such as "in regeneration, you become a slave of God/Jesus instead of a slave of the devil".

Quite.

Subdivisions

The vocals on this song, and maybe others on the album, are treated through "modulated delay", which is a single echo but one that rises in pitch with shortening of delay, and then falls in pitch, with lengthening of delay. This creates a complex, intriguing sound when listening closely to the lyrics while on LSD, and provides a sonic thicket to mask double-entendre mumbling and timing of the singing

So how much LSD does this guy actually do?

Mr Ego Deaths theories are applicable to any prog rock, or infact any popular music of any kind.

For example Genesis reveal themselves to be coke snorting, devil worshipping trash in the song 'Dance on a volcano'

'Holy mother of God (exclamation as amphetamine spinal rush kicks in)

You've got to go faster than that to get to the top (Dont be such a big girls blouse - take MORE SPEED)

Dirty old mountain covered in smoke (Huge home made bong - self explanatory)

She can turn you to stone, so you better start doing it right (Cold turkey is no fun, so just do more drugs and dont let it get to that)

You get the picture?

I cant believe we've all been so blind for so long  If anyone comes across any other obvious lyrical links to Satanism and drug abuse in the prog world, please be sure to share it with us.

Well, here's Mr Ego Deaths take on one verse:

'

I walk down vanity fair, [allusion to dominance of ego-consciousness]
Memory lane ev'rywhere [all mental constructs and memory retrieval seen as alike]
Wall Street shuffles there, [perceptual waviness in altered state - walls and streets shuffle]
Dressed in flowing hair.

Far out dude, I am the f****ing walrus!!

OMG, IT'S SO TRUE...I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!!!!

(Backflips down the street in a Jake Blues styleeee)

Well done and thank you, Blacksword - it is rare that one gets to experience a web site where so much thought, time and effort has been put in to share one's outlook on life; rarer still, when you find such a site which so completely echoes your own concerns in respect of those demons in angels' guise, Rush (actually an acronym of "Ruminating Up Satan's Hole").

Finally, I feel vindicated in my opinions

Finally, I can shed the illusory mantle of a Rush fan

Finally, I can expound the opinion that Neil Peart is, in fact Lucifer incarnate, Geddy Lee is that foul demon of the outer circle, Astoroth, and Alex Lifeson began life as a small Yorkshire terrier called Gerald.

The Catharsis,

The relief,

The utter, utter, utter, utter, utter, utter drivel on that website!

Yeah, but no, but yeah, but no, but... aaaargh! My brain hurts. Here was I thinking they were just a bunch of fun-loving Canucks whose drummer was a bit of a brainiac with an over-fondness for Ayn Rand. Neil was right about communism, though.

Anybody noticed the bit on the Rock In Rio extras DVD where the band are backstage pre-show and Peart is poring over a book, looking for interesting historical sites to visit and Geddy is trying pay attention but keeps getting distracted by the early arrivals singing and chanting on the pitch outside. It's priceless - he looks like a little boy who wants to go out to play but can't until Dad has checked his homework.
