Gabriel has the edge in my view. He has a melancholic atmosphere to his songs which I like

A comparison is almost unfair. Genesis were a different band after Gabriel left. The emphasis on theatrics inevitably went. Collins did an excellent job as singer, but as a frontman he was a very different character to Gabriel. I like both singers. They both made a huge contribution to the Genesis sound - vocally - over the years.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

This has always been a tough one for me. Technically Phil has always had the more dynamic range over Peter. He can really belt out a song.

On the other hand, Peter is much more distinct and original. Plus as a frontman, Peter out-classed Phil by a long shot.

I guess I would have to give them an equal billing here.

IMO Peter Gabriel is member of an exclusive and closed society composed by the 10-12 best rock singers. So, no chance for Collins, a good drummer and an average singer, indeed.

What exactly does "pwns" mean?

Anyway, Collins is probably technically a better singer than Gabriel but he doesn't have the same feeling, and he can't give Genesis songs such as Musical Box the same air of menace that Gabriel does.
And there's just no comparison in their solo careers.

In terms of singing, this poll is a non starter, Gabriel blowes Collins into the weeds, and almost all other singers as well. But collins was a great drummer, I just wish he stayed behind the kit.

I do like Collins voice, but prefer Gabriel as (lead) Genesis vocalist -- he's more interesting in his sound, and, I find, can convey more varied  emotion (pathos, humour, menace, eeriness, etc.).Ermm

(And of course live, Gabriel was/is a much more dynamic, charismatic performer.)Cool

I've not heard too much of Gabriel so I can't really say, but I think Phil Collins is an amaing singer.

Gabriel is much better for sure ... and I've never heard him playing the drums. Maybe he's better in that field as well.

The reality is that Genesis was two different bands; Pre & Post-Gabriel. Some will argue that after Steve Hackett left they were a third band. You have to decide if you liike any or all Genesis, regardless of the singer (or drummer).

I generally like Genesis from Trespass to Invisible Touch. But I do prefer Gabriel-Era Genesis.
