Thanx I guess I'll have to give it a try,

useally I buy his albums unheard, and Raingods was like a meeting with old friends,

but Fellini Day's made me wonder if it still is the Fish I like (other slight disappointements were Suits, only raw meat has stand the test of time, and Sun sets on empire).

hey velvet , yur pure dead brilliant at that so yu ur ..LoL!

Seriously, Fish is contemplating leaving the music buisness altogether. I'm no sure if it's a mixture of bad luck or what but somethings making the big man thinking about packing it all in, this saddens me imensely as i have never seen him and some how managed to miss him on tour this year. A talent like Fish should not be quitting the prog scene.

    awwwwwwwwright..!!!

Hey SV no need to go railing at people but you are young so it's understandable.GDUB like all artists Fish has made some very average albums the one you mentioned and Fellini Days come to mind. But Vigil as Reed Lover so clearly pointed out for Blacksword  is a superb album from start to finish.Sometimes music grabs you and holds you no matter what age you are.For me currently it's RGWZ it really is just a fantastic album.Field of crows is also very good but not as strong as the two highlighted.Bob thanks for your input it's appreciated I only hope that the Fish man  checks out forums such as these. He is a highly talented individual who should forget the acting thing and stick to what he is best suited to, making music.Raingods is a very fine prog album buy it and find out.SV tnx for getting these good ol prog boys moving.

I am guilty of not haing taken an interest in Fish's solo career. To be honest as much as I liked Marillion in their Fishy days, I stopped listerning when he left and lost interest in their music for quite a while. Only in the last year have I dug out all my old Marillion vinyl, played it, replaced it with CD's and even invested in some Hogarth Marillion, which I'm not that blown away by to be honest.

I clearly need an education, so I'll read some reviews, and make a purchase very soon. Recommendations please!!??

The problem with a lot of lead singers when they go solo, or make solo albums, is that their output is dominated even more by vocals. Because they will often not have the ability to play a musical instrument, they feel their voice has to be constantly heard, for it to be their album.

In a band situation, the rest of the group will have their influence, and hopefully this leads to a balanced album with sometimes lengthy instrumental sections.

Other band members such as guitarists, bassists, drummers etc. do not seem to have this attitude to their solo work to nearly the same degree, probably becuase most of them try to sing!Confused

I think Fish's early solo output suffered in this way. With "Raingods with zippos" though, Fish seemed to be prepared to make much more of a band album, and the result was probably his most progressive album yet. (Hey I must save that for my review!LOLWink)

I agree Fragile, RWZ is a very good album probably Fish's best since his days with you know who.

Good to see SV likes it too!Big smile

I have loved Fish and his lyrics since I discovered him on SFAJT.  While I find his solo work spotty (I didn't like "Suits" for instance), some of his work is outstanding.  I especially loved "Sunsets on Empire", from the intro guitar work of "Johnny Punter", to the impassioned lyrics of the title track.  I can't say that I cared for RWZ, but I'll have to go back and listen to it again.

BTW: If anyone has a tab for the guitar of "Johnny Punter", I would truly love to learn that song.
