The ending of "Seven Stones"! Also, I know it's not prog, but I have to mention the intro to "Strawberry Fields Forever". |

Epitaph was my first song that made me fall in love with these very "mellow" and beautiful instrument so IMO its one of the songs that has one of the best use of mellotron.

You are right Candy Apple Red, the Moody Blues are great. You are also right by saying that Mike Pinder brought his first Mellotron Mark II at the Dunlop Tires company for maybe 10% the price of a new one in 1966. Mr.Pinder used to work at the Streetly factory for 18 months. He tested the finished Mark II at the end of the production line. When he leave Streetly to go with the Moody Blues, he wanted a mellotron but he doesn't have the money for a new one. Then, Mr. Leslie Bradley (the mellotron inventor) called Mike Pinder and say that there's one available at the Dunlop Tires Co. for a very reasonnable price. For the Amon Düül 2 albums and choir organ subject,I never seen an image of this "choir organ" and only seen this article on the planetmellotron site.Apparently, the choir organ are very rare and they're only 1 or 2 instruments in existence. The debate came when one of my friend brought the "Wolf City" cd a couple of months ago. He told me that the album is full of mellotron and we listened to it. I told him after hearing that it sound a lot like mellotron choir but a lot of the chords played on the album are over 8 seconds in duration. After, I found about the article on the web and told my friend about the choir organ. You are right Eric about the Earth & Fire. Their early albums have great mellotron. I love their "Song for the Marching Children" suite. They used the rare M300 and apparently it's the same machine that is used on Ekseption early albums. Edited by pierreolivier |

I wasn't too chauvinistic .. By the way, I feel very ashamed that I didn't mention early The Strawbs (the BBC In Concert CD has marvellous Mellotron work, especially the choir Mellotron in Down By the Sea) and Barclay James Harvest (Andrea, are you on a holiday or do you have another romantic dinner ..?) their Live 2-LP is one big Mellotron party! |

Thanks for clearing that one up for me Pierre! I asked on a separate Amon Duul thread a while ago if anyone knew what the "choir organ" was and a couple of people said Mellotron, but I always thought it sounded different. But whatever it is, the end of Sleepwalker's Timeless Bridge is just stunning! As for Mellotron, the first "orgasmic" 'tron sound I remember hearing was "The Voyage" by the Moodies, and it just blew me away. And to think it was bought from the Dunlop Tyres Social Club in Birmingham! Many others I love have been mentioned, but "And You and I" always sounds special. But possibly the best is Watcher. I nearly fell off the balcony at Newcastle City Hall to that one! Apparently a weird mix of choir, brass and strings was used. |

My favourite mellotron parts in prog are those from "Grave new world" by the Strawbs, this album really is a mellotron heaven (by the way, Rick Wakeman is not the keyboard player here, this is the first Strawbs album with Blue Weaver on keys). |

You are right Salmacis, The Czar album is a great proto-prog album and full of beautiful mellotron Mark II (the 60's model with tubes pre-amp).In the same field, the Spring and Gracious! albums are also great. These albums filled with Mark II sound are great. |

Seeing pierreoliver's screen pic reminded me of one of THE great mellotron albums; Czar. 'Tread Softly On My Dreams' is a mellotron classic from that album...

Hi to all, My favorite mellotron part from prog right now are: -In the wake of the Poseidon from In the Wake of the Poseidon by King Crimson. -SFF- Live in Papenburg 1975- the whole album is incredible for mellotron parts. -Museo Rosenbach- Zarathustra (the suite). Sorry to be a downer, but I'm afraid that it's not mellotron on the Amon Düül 2 albums "Tanz der Lemminge" and "Wolf city". The instrument mistaken for the mellotron is a "choir organ"and it's supposed to be more rare than mellotron. You can have more infos about that here:http://www.planetmellotron.com/reviewsmis.htm#amonduulii Have a good day!
