Topic: Best lenght for epics Posted: February 03 2006 at 00:30 |

Nah, I find the most successful long songs are 7-10.
There are many over this length which are fab (Echoes, Awaken etc) but
much prefer Starship Trooper, Heart of the Sunrise etc. The Classic
Yes compilation proves this without doubt, all the songs on that come
in under 10 minutes and there isn't a dud on there. |
I agree! It
doesn't really matter to me, as long as the song is good. But honestly,
I can't hold my attention to a song that's 20+ minutes for that long
very often. The Odyssey by Symphony X is the exception, though.

Although length does not confirm whether a song is good or not, but I would consider epics to be anything longer than 10min (and that doesnt mean all 10min songs are epic). I think epic songs really do need to be what their title is... EPIC - telling of a grand story that builds through many themes reaching an emotional climax of many colors and sounds.
Anyway, I often prefer SONGS that are 7-10min in length because most of them seem to offer the most without over doing it. It just so happens that my favorite songs end up being on the longer side of even 6 to 10min.
My favorite epics usually 15 - 25min (even though TAAB is considered one song, I still dont see it as a 40+min epic).
BTW - I voted for 20-25min epics

25 to 30 minutes. It is a perfect time to try to learn all the secret the song has.
It also lets the artist to have more variation and a wide range for experimentation.

Length doesn't really matter to me, but if I had to choose I would pick 15-25 minutes.
A lot of my faves fall into that range.

It doesn't matter, as long as it is consistent, and bearing good material.

Sure, it could be. Essentially, an epic is a long narrative or story. If a band can cram a relatively long story with some powerful music into a 7-10 minute period, it could be considered an epic, though I don't think it would be a frequent occurance.

No matter the lenght, i love 9 minutes epics like La Villa Strangiato, and 16 minutes like Dogs and 20 to 25 minutes like Gates of Delirium and 60 minutes like Amarok, if that epic can take us to another world, then is a great epic, no matter how many minutes ..
