I could never pick a "best" from that list. All those bands are so diverse and relevent in thier own ways. I could pick out favorites but not a definite best.

Psychotic Waltz is the best in my opinion, with Dream Theater a close second. It just seems to me that Psychotic Waltz has a very original style which I have yet to hear copied.
If anyone knows where I can get a copy of some Flute and Voice (Indo-Prog/Raga Rock) albums please PM me! Many thanks!

Pain of Salvation - the most original and fresh among them. Mention for Queensryche and Riverside ...

DT lacks too much of ideas ... Most od their longer songs start nice but become boring after few minutes ...

Sucha difficult choice. The poll was for best band so I went for Threshold as they are the most consistant across their albums I have. But then there's Ayreon, DT, PoS, etc... etc.....Oh dear, have I made the right choice?

After listening to the Octavarium Mini-Opera Track (24 mins.) I surely vote Dream Theater...No doubt about it

I voted for Opeth... It is kind of strange music, but I like it a lot...

I think that there were two phases - the first one in the 80s led by Queensryche and Fates Warning, and the second one in the 90s led by Dream Theater. I call it "Classic Prog Metal" and "Modern Prog Metal" on my website.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum... what a fabulous experimental/metal band!  Thanks to make me remember them! ^^

*Jump on his "of Natural History" album*

I think they're phenomenal as well (see them live if you can!). I don't understand why they're considered metal, however. I wouldn't consider them metal any more than I'd consider The Residents metal.

SGM isn't metal.

They are avant prog, but not progressive metal.

I've said "Experimental/metal band" cause they have some hard pieces (I love them all ^^).  But I recognize my mistake, it's much more an Experimental/avant-gardiste band.

note: I think the Rez are very far from metal melodic, much more than SGM can be.
