"Machine Head" is the quintessential Purple album.

Actually "Made in Japan" & "In rock" are very good, but my vote goes for "Shades of Deep Purple" just because it was the very first "prog album" I bought !

Made in Japan, although te best album for me is "Live in Paris"; it's one of the last performances before Blackmore leaving and it's terrific, although little known.

Yeah, and it's hard to understand why Hawkwind, Uriah Heep, Kate Bush, ELO or Death (just for a few examples) are Prog, but they're here, so consider them Prog-Related.
Oh wait...
That's exactly how Deep Purple are classified

Studio wise I'd have to second the vote for "In Rock." This release accompanied me on many a church youth group meeting as a child. The other youngsters thought I was crazy. Fair to say the youth group meetings didn't last long. Otherwise the vote would go to "Made In Japan." Many a night my friend Mark and I would get stoned and listen to all four sides of the double vinyl. Great memories. Why is everything so much better as a youngster? I guess everything is so new then. Deep Purple used to blow me away. Now I've turned to the Italian scene for a fresh take on prog and I am still blown away at times. Just fewer and further between now. I am also getting into the Spanish prog scene and Polish prog scsene for a fresh take on it.

For me The Book of Taliesyn, because it is very pshychedelic/progressive. Anthem and River Deep Mountain High are superb.

smoke on the water is a boring hard rock song, with a crap bass line and one of Mr Gillans most mediocre singing performances ;)

"In Rock" - but only just ahead of "Made in Japan", which is also stunning.
