Topic: Best Song On "VAPOR TRAILS"? Posted: February 03 2006 at 12:50 |
Earthshine is my favorite but there are a lot of other good ones - One Little Victory and Freeze among them.

I hope the next disc is like this....raw, unprocessed...aggressive...

The opening kind of solo in "One Little Victory" told my mind... this is going to be a hell of and album!

Progressive music, a kind of life.

Earthshine for sure, that 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2 bit is great, if ya
know what I mean. Also I really like vapor trails, especially the
beginning, the snare sounds great, it's one of those snare drum tones
that you can just hear and be like "DW...no doubt about it"

Hey there.
One Little Victory does it for me, I still get the same feeling I got in '02 the first time I put VT on and heard that power drum intro: "Yes, The Man is back, One Little Victory indeed"

Congrats.

I went for Out of the Cradle, but there are lots of remarkable songs such as Ghost Rider, Vapor Trail, Earhtshine or Sweet Miracle.

Peaceable Kingdom. The verses are rather annoying IMO, but that chorus is just fantastic. I love Geddy's Steve Harris-esque rolling bassline on the chorus.

I am possibly the biggest rush fan going, and for me a good album is one you keep going back to and listening to over and over again (fragile, anyone?) and this album didnt do that for me. Its not bad, by any streach of the imagination, but it aint no 2112. heck, it not evan a Signals. I just think mabey they can do a little better, is all.

I am a huge Rush fan. That said, I feel that Vapour Trails is a great album, with Rush exploring some new territory and going for a truly organic sound, with an almost Emo feel at times. I have no problem with this as the album is solid in terms of the songwriting, however, the album's sound quality is terrible at times. It is not simply a matter of the band wanting to go in a different direction, the album was mastered too loud, the evidence can be found in the many instances of clipping that occur - that is, parts of the music, mainly drum parts, are lost in the overwhelming volume. When I listen to the album I often hear crackle and fuzz in the louder sections which is a terribly obvious flaw which I find hard to excuse or pass off as the intended sound the band was after.
Actually, I can remember when Vapor Trails was first released Geddy did an interview in which he said he thought the album sounded terrible when he first heard it. He said he talked to Alex about it, but Alex reassured him that it was great and there was nothing to worry about.... Geddy knew it and Alex was in denial! So they should hurry up and remaster the damn thing!!!

The city crouches, steaming In the early morning half-light The sun is still a rumor And the night is still a threat
Slipping through the dark streets And the echoes and the shadows Something stirs behind me And my palms begin to sweat
Sometimes I freeze - until the light comes Sometimes I fly - into the night Sometimes I fight - against the darkness Sometimes I'm wrong - sometimes I'm right
Coiled for the spring Or caught like a creature in the headlights Into a desperate panic Or a tempest of blind fury Like a cornered beast Or a conquering hero
The menace threatens, closing And I'm frozen in the shadows I'm not prepared to run away And I'm not prepared to fight
I can't stand to reason Or surrender to a reflex I will trust my instincts Or surrender to my fright
Sometimes we freeze - until the light comes Sometimes we're wrong - and sometimes we're right Sometimes we fight - against the darkness Sometimes we fly - into the night
Blood running cold Mind going down into a dark night Of a desperate panic Or a tempest of blind fury Like a cornered beast Or a conquering hero
Sometimes I freeze Sometimes I fight Sometimes I fly Into the night

I voted for Ghost rider. Great bass riff intro.
I'd like to use this occasion to make an observation: I think it's a shame that so many people misunderstood this album, especially the sound of it (like I read in recnt reviews on this site). There is nothing wrong with the sound, it's not true that Rush made a mess of it. It's just clear that they wanted to guy in a slightly different direction. The songs are very mature and the sound feels very modern and comfortable with me! Rush succeeded very well in creating a small masterpiece. A piece of their own really. You can't blame 'em for the sound, especially when you know how they cared for the sound on their previous records! Besides, as prog fans you should learn to cope with progressions! isn't that a logical and esential part of progressive music??
Vapor trails is yet another album that features Rush in excellent shape which means with great songwriting, great musicianship and artwork that is up-to-date, unlike some other bands that still release records (cf. jethro tull, uriah heep, deep purple ... bloody awful)

Excellent point(s), Falafel. You should write a review with those words you used. I couldn't have said it better; frankly, I can't agree more. Thank You. <brought a tear to my eye>

Thanks a lot!! I'll surely write a more elaborate review containing these thougts when I've got some more time (I'm doing exams at the moment!)
cheers!

I can't choose. This is one of
my favorite Rush albums, as there are not any weak tracks. My favorite
would be either One Little Victory, Ceiling Unlimited, Ghost Rider,
Peacable Kingdom, Stars Look Down, Vapor Trail, or Earthshine. (doesn't
realy narrow it down, but it's the best I can do)
also, has anyone else noticed that though Rush is a Canadian band, they
use the American spelling of "Vapor" (instead of the Canadian/British
spelling of "Vapour")? I felt a bit betrayed when I noticed...
