It is so hard to choose between John and Paul because I feel they were both brilliant,musical geniuses.
But I will go with Lennon.

BTW (dung beetles aside for the nonce), I'll agree with Syzygy, and go with George for talent too, although the acerbic John was always my favourite/most interesting Beatle.
Still, I think Paul wrote the most quintessential Beatles songs.
Tough call.

George Harrison:
- Became a good sitar player under the tutelage of Ravi Shankar and had a life long involvement with Indian music
- Had the first moog synthesiser in the UK and recorded an album 'Electronic Sound'
- Was responsible for the first large scale rock concert for charity - Concert for Bangla Desh
- Was the founder of Hand Made Films and producer of Life of Brian
- Wrote 2 of the 30 songs which get the most radio play (Something and My Sweet Lord)
- Wrote songs with Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton, among others
To say nothing of his contributions to the Beatles and his solo career - All Things Must Pass and Brainwashed are probably the best Beatles solo albums. Let's hear it for the quiet one!

I voted also for Macca mainly because IMO he was the ex-beatle that got closer to prog during the 70s, specially in albums like "Ram" and "Band on the run". 
However Ringo is probably the great prog-fan among the Fab4. His "All-Star Band" included names like Joe Walsh, Greg Lake and Roger Hodgson.

^ Correct, the "Taxman" solo is by McCartney. This solo is also featured (backwards) in "Tomorrow Never Knows") - free bit of useless information for you.
As much as I love Lennon, and he was more innovative than Macca, I've voted for Macca as the best overall songwriter, plus the best bass player, also good guitarist, piano player and drummer. Makes you sick really!
As for Ringo, he wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles (according to Lennon).

Maybe 'Taxman' was the first Beatles hit writen by Harrison.
But in fact, The Beatles had recorded other Harrison's songs before it:
- Don't bother me
- You like me too much
- I need you
- Think for yourself
- If I needed someone
The odd thing, according to several sources, is that the heavy 'Taxman' guitar solo that entered the records was done by Paul McCartney!!!

Oh I can't do this one ...
George Harrison was a outstanding talent ... but he doesn't even belong in the more talented half of The Beatles, IMO ...
I can't and won't chose between two of the finest singer/songwriters of the 20th century ...

I voted George Harrison, even though I had a dream that included John
Lennon this night. But Lennon's gonna get all the votes anyway.
Harrison's All Things Must Pass CD is -amazing- though. And almost all of the songs he wrote are Beatle classics.
