Words for my grave stone , here lies tuxon and why shouldnt he

words on a hookers grave stone "here SHE lies, like she lived, on her back."

the song that I most relate with is "the web" by Marillion (for I am the cyclops in the tenement, a soul without a cause)

but the definite funeral classic should be "The gates of delerium"by Yes.

SOON OH SOON THE LIGHT, and of course the mayhem preceding that.

My life can't be defined by a song but by an album, probably Pink Floyd's the Wall.

But if I have to choose a song for my epitaph it won't be Waiting for the Worms or The Trial. Something by Queen, I think "Who Wants to Live Forever" would be quite a good choice.

"Eclipse" by Pink Floyd along with "Great Gig in the Sky," also by the Floyd.

"And all that is now, and all that is gone, and all that's to come, and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

There is no dark side of the moon, really. Matter of fact it's all dark. (The only think that makes it look light is the sun)"

Hey, Danbo and Peter:

Yes the lyrics are "nice" and if they strike a chord with you that's fine, but, (Here, maybe Reed states the bleedin' obvious!) the " Do not stand at my grave and cry" bit is from a verse by Mary Fry- I know this because it is on my Grandmother's gravestone and she died in 1975! It is on about 30 (yes, i've counted them) gravestones in the cemetery ( I used to cut through the cemetery everyday on the way to school) and is apparently so often used on gravestones and obituaries that it has fallen into disuse, and is seen as a cliche.

I know it is not plagiarism on the scale of Grendel...........Wink

Lovely, (string section and all) and I want to believe it....Cry

A fine sentiment: celebrate the life of the dear departed, moreso than mourn the death....

I hate you Peter... I was listening to "AS THE WORLD" while I worked in the yard. "NEVER THE SAME" began and I remembered yer words. I took a few moments to focus on the lyrics rather then the tree I was trimming. Suddenly I'm struck with the power of Brett Kull's words. It hit me hard and I swept leaves and twigs with tears streaming down my face. Damn you Prof! A tough guy isn't supposed to crumble so easily. I finished the task with blurred vision and a taste of mortality. I hope the end is not the end.

Here are the full lyrics ....

For the curious:

Never The Same

What can I say?
What can I do you for you?
Some are here for but a moment
Then are taken in an instant to eternity
Remember life and what's been shared with you
That you have shared

It's funny how we feel closer
With the ones that we love
When they're farthest away
You can feel them so near
Just 'round the corner the memory still clear

"Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there I did not die."
I say to you I will see you again
On the other side someday

"There's never endings only discovery,"
I tell myself over and over again
Some leave their mark in our hearts then go

It's hard to continue onward
When forever comes down it comes down so heavy
Too final to forget
You've got to believe there's something more

After the song is over
The dance goes on, so dance away
When all is said and done
Remember what's been given, not taken away
But you struggle and you strain
As the undertow pulls you down

The years will spare the rod and soften the hardest blow
...but I am never the same
With time comes a certain fading and erasing
...but I am never the same

In each man
There lies a start that has no end
A means to be more
A light that shines in its own special way

Left with cold distance
I'll always be with you
We weather the cycle
I'll always be there
So fragile to balance
Too potent to harness
Life charges past the mortal in man

Remember all the life you shared every day
There's never any endings
...but I'll never be the same

Lyrics by Brett Kull

The Song i'd like played at my funeral would be Nick Cave's 'Death Is Not The End'

When you're sad and when you're lonely
And you haven't got a friend
Just remember that death is not the end
And all that you held sacred
Falls down and does not mend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end
When you're standing on the crossroads
That you cannot comprehend
Just remember that death is not the end
And all your dreams have vanished
And you don't know what's up the bend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end
When the storm clouds gather round you
And heavy rains descend
Just remember that death is not the end
And there's no-one there to comfort you
With a helping hand to lend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end
For the tree of life is growing
Where the spirit never dies
And the bright light of salvation
Up in dark and empty skies
When the cities are on fire
With the burning flesh of men
Just remember that death is not the end
When you search in vain to find
Some law-abiding citizen
Just remember that death is not the end

A song that represents my life would be Kate Bush's 'This Womens Work'

Epitaph on my grave stone  ' Shine On You Crazy Diamond'

The Wall By Kansas

Gold and Diamonds cast a spell

There not for me I know well

The riches that I seek are waiting on the other side

There is more than I can measure

in a treasure of a love that I can find

and though it's always been with me

I must tear down the wall and let it be

All I am and all that I could ever want to be

Shinning through and back at all those who wait to cross

There is no loss

I suppose if there was one song that I would liked to have played at my funeral, it would have to be 'Mah na mah na' by Piero Umiliani (made famous by the Muppets I think).

I'd love the idea of my coffin sliding away down the chute while that ponded out over the church P.A.

Not very prog, I admit.

I must remind the right honourable gentleman that a monologue is not a decision.

However,if I were maudlin and sentimental and I wanted to give the mourners a good cry for their money I would probably go for "Rain On Black Skin" by Edgar Froese, for two reasons: One: Being an arch atheist,Edgar Froese is the closest I get to having a god,and Two: That particular track, apart from being rather sad and melancholy and consequently well suited for the occasion, is probably the most beautiful piece of music I know and even though I'd be in the coffin stone dead and unable to hear a damned thing,at least I could make sure that the mourners (assuming there were any) were treated to some great music.

It's not in my nature to get maudlin and sentimental so I'd probably wind up choosing no music at all and my gravestone will either have the words  FINALLY! or I'LL BE BACK TO GET YOU! I haven't made up my mind yet.

I suspect Muse 'Thoughts Of A Dying Aetheist' might be relevent to me at that time.

However the song I would like played at my funeral would be 'White Punks On Dope'

For a gravestone or funeral, from Echolyn: (See my review of the stellar "As the World.")

A fine sentiment: celebrate the life of the dear departed, moreso than mourn the death....

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

Representing my life...

Call her moonchild
Dancing in the shallows of a river
Lovely moonchild
Dreaming in the shadow
of the willow.

Talking to the trees of the
cobweb strange
Sleeping on the steps of a fountain
Waving silver wands to the
night-birds song
Waiting for the sun on the mountain.

She's a moonchild
Gathering the flowers in a garden.
Lovely moonchild
Drifting on the echoes of the hours.

Sailing on the wind
in a milk white gown
Dropping circle stones on a sun dial
Playing hide and seek
with the ghosts of dawn
Waiting for a smile from a sun child.

The song for my funeral (besides the Great Gates of Kiev)  would be:

  Until we Sleep (David Gilmour)
Dance, to the movement of the stars
Sing till the walls around us ring
Pray that it never fades away
Until we sleep

Feast, go ahead now, take your fill
Drink, till the room begins to sway
Play, and your cares will blow away
Until we sleep
Into a deep and dreamless sleep our spirits fall
And what we sow we cannot reap nor keep at all

Work, though the work will break your back
Rest, hope to feel your spirits rise
But the years, have cut you down to size
Now go to sleep
Into a deep and dreamless sleep our spirits fall
And what we sow we cannot reap nor keep at all

Gdub:

Given the title of the thread, why not "Epitaph" by KC?

I must say I admire your choice of "Rudy," and even though I don't know you, I can see why one might be drwn to it.  A beautiful choice.

Peace.

Bravado by Rush. I love the whole song but the final verse is beautiful:

And if the music stops
There's only the sound of the rain
All the hope and glory
All the sacrifice in vain
If love remains
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

Wonderful!
