1. King crimson - love of my life (hope my wife do'nt read this).
2. Pink floyd
3. Genesys
4. Yes
All did great music, though I must admit I heared Yes much less (have only CTTE, Fragile & Relayer) while all the others are known and loved for many years now.
I think other great 70's giants should be mentioned are : VDGG, JT, ELP, Robert Wyatt, Renaissance & GG. For me Rush is a nice band but not in the league of the others here, sorry.
I also think The moody blues and The nice should be mentioned as the real beginers of prog and quite quality music makers.

Mellow music? - The nile song, Money, Run like hell, One of these days, In the flesh, Sheep. Hmmmm, can't mellow out to those tracks

from that list:
1. Yes & Genesis
2. King Crimson 73-74 era is great IMO...I should give their 80s albums another try cause I couldn't get their sound except for some songs: "Requiem" is awesome... haven't listened to their 90s projects yet..but Larks,
Starless and Red are among my favorite prog albums
?. Pink Floyd... used to like them a lot (except for DSOTM) and had every single album but then something happened...I dunno...guess that happens...got bored and that was it

Sorry, but I do not consider KC as a prog giant. Never progressed further than being a support band or playing colleges. Mediocre album sales even in the 70's! Least influential band ect! |
1) They influenced a huuuuuuuuge amount of bands out there.......
2) "In The Court Of Crimson King" has since been considered the founding opus of a new musical genre progressive rock! (This is copied from the PAs King Crimson bio)
3) Sales do not make quality..... Check out Michael Jackson's sales compared to John Scofield......
4) The concert headliner's aren't always the best
Ohhhhhhh and
5) THEY ARE A PROG GIANT

of these.... Rush but really, I like only three albums by Genesis, and none by KC (I just haven't been able to get into them) Yes is one of my favorites and Pink Floyd is in a league far from these other bands.
Its between Yes and Pink Floyd for me, but its really hard to compare bands that are as different as these two, so I won't.

King Crimson and Yes are my favorite of the four, then Genesis, and then Floyd.
King Crimson, however, have managed to maintain at least some of their integrity throughout the years, so I respect them quite a bit.
