Topic: truth---Peart or Portnoy? - i値l kill you Posted: December 08 2005 at 04:21 |
I'm not a huge fan of either band but from what I've heard, I'd vote for Neil Peart.

technicality doesn't determine quality of music and should also not determine quality of a single instrumentalist. Take Jon Theodore for example (The Mars Volta drummer), he isn't all technical, using a fairly small kit, and has amazing inventive fills everywhere. He suits the band perfectly, which is a drummer's primary goal. (I myself am a drummer by the way).

peart of course....portnoy manages to be the most unemotional little prick i've ever witnessed on stage, along with every other member of DT minus Myung and sometimes Ruddess (mostly outside of DT for him)...DT is nothing but a technical powerhouse with little to no emotion per song (), this comes off as pleasing for about 6 months, then their charm wears off and all you hear is a bunch of notes that make you want to scream...while I appreciate their technical prowess I believe they could be a much better band than they are...Rush on the otherhand had emotion of sorts while not sacrificing technical prowess which comes off as ultimately satisfying. While this has nothing to do with drumming outwardly, indirectly it definately does. Peart was the greater of the two, you have my opinion. |
I agree whole-heartedly
Peart is 10 times better. I respect Mike but he is all Technical no feeling.

sorry about being angry earlier, i was pretty pissed about something. no musician that practices makign the art deserves any type of name or stereotype, yet we all have opinions, and in mine peart is the clear victor.

Didn't we just have one of these Peart/Portnoy polls?
Peart, of course.

- I've seen DT live and as far as I was aware they didn't lack emotion. Not any less than any other band in paticular anyway. Same for Portnoy and other drummers.
- Neil Peart himself is not emotional when he drums.
- I love Pearts drumming
- I love Portnoys drumming
- At the moment I love Portnoy a bit more.
- Thank you

... so that would make you an emotional, big prick then.
Not really trying to stir up sh*t here, but I'm sick of people here trying to blow up their egos by calling accomplished musicans names. It's simply pathetic.
And for the record, Peart is the better drummer.

This poll was done already and I'll go with Peart again. Portnoy is a very
good drummer though. His LTE stuff (like raindance said) is very impressive.

Still Portnoy for me. Not because of his work with DT but his side projects ie. Liquid Tension Experiment, Transatlantic and in particular his drumming on Neal Morse's albums. Peart uses the same 'fills' much too often for me!

yes lack of emotion...seeriously, listen to a Dream Theater followed by a TMV album, followed by a Rush album, followed by a Dredg album, followed by almost any other prog band (even freaking Tool, whom I don't much like, has more emotion than DT)...I own EVERY DT album...they just grow so old...i used to be infatuated also...but there is much better stuff out there, not that I don't respect your opinion as it also used to be mine, but DT is lacking for me. |
KK... but I still find a lot of emotion in Their playing... On the other hand TMV or dregd don't do anything for me... Just a matter of taste
