I don't think that's a cop out at all. Even though long songs and concept albums aren'e typical of Tull, this one in particular embodies all of the classic Tull elements, i.e. great poetry, odd time, orchestral, rock, AND folk elements, not to mention humor. good stuff all around and highly demonstrative of the bands virtuosity and versatility.

A Passion Play in my opinion! Always my favourite Jethro Tull's progressive effort!!!

I don't know why...maybe because it seems to be more "humoresque" and theatrical in its essence...BTW I bought it before Thick As A Brick cause I was delighted by the stunning cover!

Maybe TAAB. But Velvet green,Hunting girl,Baker St. Muse,Moths,Flying dutchman or all the greats acoustic pieces over the years too.

Thick as a Brick, for sure.  I does have the advantage of being much longer than most J-Tull songs.  A Passion Play is also good, just not nearly as good.

I too had to go for Thick As A Brick even though it feels like a cop out

My other candidates were Songs From The Wood, Witches Promise and My God

I'd choose Living in the Past because it has all the classic Tull ingredients: unusual time signature (5/4), plenty of flute, elements of jazz, folk, blues and rock, thoughtful lyrics and an imaginative arrangement .
