Topic: is prog for fundamentalists? Posted: November 26 2005 at 04:12 |
I think so-called 'fundamentalists' can be found everywhere, and not only in the prog community. As for myself, I'm exactly the opposite of a fundamentalist: there are kinds of music I positively dislike, but at the same time I'm very open-minded about diverse influences in my favourite music (prog, of course). In fact, any fundamentalist attitude disturbs me quite a lot.

What you enjoy is a part of YOU. When you wish others would hold
your favorite bands/music in the same regard, you are trying to hoist
your tastes in music upon them.
I wrote in another thread a little while ago that each of us knows what
we like and dislike. Your like and dislikes will most certainly
be different than mine.
I dislike - to a high degree - any and all rap
I like - to a great extent - progish music.
Actually, I think Classical music is the greatest expression of music
in existance, but I would rather listen to prog! What does that
make me?

I don't like just prog. I like good music. Any music that is intresting and well written I enjoy. A lot of prog falls under that category, and thats why I like prog so much.

I've never thought that progressive rock is the best one! I prefer by fare the vibrant sensuality and the ecstatic qualities of "drone" music for instance which appeals to a higher part of human perception and sensitivity. Generally I like music for the "brain", a few progressive items are interesting for that but not its totality.

Interesting question with many posible answers:
- I believe that if you embrace something, go all the way, since I was 13 I felt that Prog is the most rewarding and chellenging musical genre, despite I have classical formation and always loved Rock & Roll. So yes, I'm a fanatic of the genre.
- Early Genesis is my favorite band, but I'm not a blind fundamentalist, I know they had some weak spots, there are bands like King Crimson that don't like very much, but I have to accept they have greatness, it's evident for any proghead and would be absurd to deny this fact.
- This doesn't mean I only listen Prog', still buy a lot of Classical stuff (Especially Modern Classical, a good bunch of Rock and some good Pop) there are bands that I simpply love like Boomtown Rats, Meatloaf, Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, etc which have no relation with Prog.
- About my comments, I always try to be fair and as objective as possible, of course there's a lot of subjectivity when talking about any artistic expression but this doesn't mean we don't try to be fair.
- A Pope in the Middle Age, why not a witch hunter Reverend in Salem? or a Davidian a few years ago? What's that buzz with Catholics, are we guilty of everything?

Almost everyone thinks the music he listens to is better than everyone else's. I don't, and I listen to some prog

Almost all here believe that prog music is the best one, and their favorite bands are better than the others favorite.....that sounds kinda fundamentalist for me....maybe youre not agree with me....I also believe that progressive music is the best, maybe i'm right or maybe not, the fact is, that the fanatism in music spoil the objetivity in our comments and then we all want to share our opinions, and convince to other people that our own vision of music is the right thing, sometimes we looks like a pope in the middle age . What do you think?
sorry about my crappy english..
