You have well sum up the sad situation.
Cd (and numeric in general) is more convenient, but the heavy price to pay is a dramatic loss of quality.
And yes, i TAKE the time to listen to music several hours a day, so i prefer analog over digital.

Whats so "Cool" about vinyl,I have about 200 vinyl albums most of them Prog all bought in the 70's because that was all we had apart from tapes that always got chewed up.
CD's give better quality are more portable and dont get scratched so dont give me the crap that  vinyl is the only real way to listen to Prog

CD's advantages are:

1.Easier Song Selection

2.Longer playtime

3.You dont have to switch the sides

4.They are smaller

So afterall in reality you have sacrficed sound quality and also the cool covers to get something that is just more easy to use...but certainly if you got the time to listen to music none of the above things does really mather.

It's great to have a big vinyl cover, with a beautiful lithograph, sometimes a fold out, and a neat slip with lyrics on it.  It's not the same with CDs.  Of course CDs are more convenient, but they don't have the same appeal for cool factor.

The "Olias of Sunhillow" cover was designed by Dave Roe, not Roger Dean.

I don't know if vinyl is "cool", but there's no doubt that they offer the best possible listening experience (if you have decent equipment and if you treat your vinyl with care). And it's fun to collect, far more interresting and challenging than collecting CDs!

My most treasured pieces of vinyl are:

Can - Tago Mago. Original german first pressing on United Artists, highly sought after gem, worth much money,roughly about 50 to 100$ (depending on condition, mine is ex-)

Popol Vuh - Affenstunde (has such a great photo on the back). Original german first pressing on Liberty, worth roughly 30 - 70$ (depending on condition, mine is vg++)

The two first Magma LPs, not sure if 1000 Degrees Centigrads on the black phillips label is a first pressing, but I'm sure it's a very early French pressing, possibly pressed the same year or the year after. These two are also highly sought after and worth approx. 40-70 $ (depending on condition, mine are ex+)

If you have the fortunate opportunity, try to get these original vinyls full of great art cover (and music of course!)

1. QUINTESSENCE. (Self entitled second album, the Jesus innercover is fantastic)

2. JON ANDERSON ("Olias of Sunhillow" with the wonderful interior book designed by Roger Dean)

3. TRIADE ("La Storia di Sabazio": pretty cool gold cover a rarity these days)

Still getting the same error.

I have a load of prog albums on vinyl, bought when I were a lad. I have my treasured copy of "Genesis Live" (the second LP I ever bought), ELP "Welcome Back My Friends..." with the triple fold-out cover, a number of Yes albums and many more.

I can't see the pictures either...I used to have about 200 albums on vinyl and lost most of them when a pipe burst and flooded our house ...yes, I know vinyl survives getting wet but the covers went mouldy and the insurance company gave me money.....I had many Yes, King Crimson, Led Zep, Floyd, Genesis, ELP amongst others, saved just a few then gave them away (to charity shop) as I bought CD's to replace them. The last vinyl album I had was the first UK LP, got the CD last year so off to the charity shop with the vinyl....

i just have 2 prog vinil albums:

Relayer - Yes

Permanent waves - Rush

but i have like 30 mini LP CD... those Jap replicas are so cool

I have Yes - CTTE, Kansas - Point of Know Return, and Rush - Moving Pictures on vinyl.  That's about it for prog on vinyl, unless you consider Genesis' self titled Prog, rather than pop.
