I ws wondering if any of you were members of or knew about the CRS (Classic Rock Society) up in Rotherham England? A lot of these "new" bands you all mention have played for the CRS and Threshold are playing on 4th September. We have discovered so many wonderful bands by attending CRS gigs and have also made so many great friends, it is a great atmosphere and of course everyone goes to listen to the music so there is rarely talking through gigs or any trouble. The most recent gig we went to was Sylvan (somebody mentioned them I think), and they were wonderful. Ricocher from Holland are also very impressive as are RPWL(from Germany I think) If any of you need contact details for the CRS I will post them, you also get a bi monthly magazine which is full of information and interviews etc. Lynn |

The Bees are a delightful Beatles-esque group. They're new album's definitely worth a spin or two.
The Flower Kings ...No need to say any more, really? Oh, except that Flower Power is a dreadful album and I wish people would stop banging on about it.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor Been around for a little while now by F# A# and Lift Your Skinny Fists are really quite wonderful.
Muse. Though Absolution was atrocious. |

I don't know how you're defining "new" so I'll stick with Glass Hammer and Galleon. I also like the piano and layored guitar textures of Coldplay but they're not prog really, yet neither is Radiohead. They're just generally good easy to listen to songs. |

SAGRADO CORACAO DA TERRA, a brasilian prog band. They created some of the most beautiful symphonic prog works in the last fifteen years. Unfortunately, their leader, singer and violinist Marcus Viana died some years ago and so they don't release records anymore since 'A leste do sol, oeste da lua', published in 2000 and featuring Andre Matos (Angra, Shaman) on one track.

A new Tangent disc is coming soon.... I agree with Land, IZZ is something refreshing in the whole genre. Salem Hill's latest "BE" is their first that defines a unique sound and the vocals are complex with intelligent lyrics. Man on Fire are another badn to check out. They've got another disc in the works, too. |

Most of my fave new prog bands (that is, that their debut album was released sometime during the last five years) are South American - from Argentina, LAS OREJAS Y LA LENGUA, ZONDA PROJECKT and TANGER, from Chile, SARAX and MAR DE ROBLES (not forgetting the 'slightly' more veterans TRYO and AKINETON RETARD). But also, I must admit that I am IN LOVE with the French instrumental combo NeBeLNeST, as well as the international supergroup THE TANGENT.

New bands. That IS a kind of hard one. Depends on how new we're talking. The newest band I listen to is probably the bristish rockband Placebo. My so-called obsession. I think the energy this band prouduces, is unlike anything else I've ever heard. I love alot of stuff from the 90's, such as PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Belly, October Project ( absolutely AMAZING!!!), Nirvana, (with focus on the music here, not the misunderstood image) Hole and newer ones as Muse too Useful_Idiot - I'm so happy you mentioned At The Drive-In and Sonic Youth. Both two of my favorites. I agree with you on Daydream Nation and Dirty (as I'm sure most people would) I think Thursdon is a great guitarist, although he often seems to lose focus and as he said, uses alot of feedback and long guitar solos, to cover up for an unfinished song. That doesn't count for everything they did at all though At The Drive-in and their Relationship of Command is amazing. Normally I wouldn't like something of that genre, but that's done in an absolutely incredible way. Placebo was also inspired by them :) |

New bands, new bands... Well, as a 16 year old, I'm probably into as much new music as I am old music. Let's see... Sonic Youth. If PT, Radiohead and Tool can count as new, so can Sonic Youth. These guys have been making awesome albums since the late 80s, and they're showing no signs of slowing down (their new one, Sonic Nurse, is great). I'd say their best albums have been Daydream Nation and Dirty, and Thurston Moore has to be one of the best rock singers/guitarists ever. At the Drive-In. Ok, they've been broken up for 4 years now, but during their brief lifespan in the 90s, they were an amazing hard rock/punk band. Relationship of Command (their last album) was absolutely stunning, and they couldn't possibly have found a better way to go out. Plus members of theirs went on to form The Mars Volta, another great band. The Mars Volta. They may only have one full length album (a second is coming this year though), but it's a hell of a full length album. An insane psychadelic concept album about a friend of theirs who attempted suicide and went into a comma. The band shows a lot of Pink Floyd/Led Zeppelin influence, but still maintians a distinct sound. Mogwai. A post-rock band from more or less the same mould as Godspeed You Black Emperor (albiet generally with shorter songs), they make some of the most gorgeous, powerful, touching compositions I've ever heard. Happy Songs For Happy People is in my top 10 albums of all-time, and was pretty much all I listened to for a month around the start of grade 10. Wilco. They evolved from a simplistic alt-country band to make a brilliant album in 2002's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which is very Radiohead-esque. Their new one A Ghost Is Born is somewhat of a step backwards, but it's still good. I could go on, but I'll leave it at that for now. |
