Topic: Best Prog Band Posted: November 11 2005 at 12:18 |
I went for Floyd, mostly because nobody else has. Floyd are a good contender, (though not entirely "prog") as they changed over the course of all their "classic" albums, they are accessible and unique, and I would contest that they never released a bad album in the Seventies either, though there were a couple of lesser works. They might compete with Genesis for me.

Jethro Tull is my favourite band, but much of their stuff, like on this was, stand up and benefit is not prog, so when I choose the greatest prog band I choose Genesis!

some prog metal people would argue symphony x and redemption are better than dream theater yet they are not on my list ... The idea is that because Genesis are there van der graph generator are represented in that form of prog in a way ( I see early Peter Gabrial as a big influence on Peter hamills style ) so I couldn`t put VDGG before Genesis .. no way !

All these lists and polls make it very easy to answer: I have thought about it a lot of times.
My choice is Yes: a wealth of good material (mostly '70's), intelligent as well as emotional music. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating: I think I listened more to Yes than to any other band.
The only band that can compete is Genesis: both Genesis and Yes never made a bad album in the '70's. I know no other band from which I can say the same.

KING CRIMSON of these! Great poll, but very often "Other: what?" selection would be nice to have...
