Topic: Prog Fans: High IQs? Posted: January 08 2006 at 15:49 |
My IQ is somewhere above 140. An official test I took when I was 6 or 7
said I was nearly a demi-genius or high-gifted or whatever it's called
if I were more tidy and organised. I used to think 120 was the average
IQ, so now it's not that much of a surprise so many people around me
appear so stupid.
This year, I took another test. I seemed to be exceptionally gifted in
verbal intelligence. Spatial intelligence was terrible. Oh, I suck at
math.

I took an IQ test about two years ago because I was doing not that good in school and my mom thought that I might have some attention problems, so they deliverd mo to some test...one of them being an IQ test. Apparently I scored like 16 points above avarage, because they used a system that went from 0 till...well I guess a lot jejeje, and that being between 100 and 120 was to be a intelligent person...and I got 126 so they told me I was quite brilliant! jejejej...I dont know if its completly true...I have the test and all but ...well, what the hell, yes I smart!!! still I suck in math

Which Pink Floyd album cover is on the back of the second woman from the left?
|
Relics, originally a budget priced compilation of early material with a rather groovy ink drawing by Nick Mason on the cover. The CD reissue features a colour version (reproduced on the woman's back) and is full price, despite featuring no extra material.

Intelligence quotients don't mean sh*t. Listening to progressive/artistic/creative/truthful music may actually make you smarter. No you don't put it on when you go to sleep and when you wake up your I.Q. is boosted by 2 points or something. ACTIVELY listening to these artists may spark your curiosity for learning. If you look up to these people, and study their music, and their personalities, you realize that alot of them are not just entertainers, but natural Scholars with a thrist for knowledge and forward thinking. Make you want to delve a little deeper, exploring all territories. Opening "the doors of perception" if you will.
If you put a young boy who has never seen or heard a drumset, in front of one, his natural instinct wouldn't be to pick up a set of brushes and play a 60 b.p.m. ballad groove. He will want to play them as hard and as fast as he can. Naturally, he wants to be the King of the Castle. So, progressive music is a natural human instinct I'd think. Boys will be Boys.

I once oin the early 80's took the Mensa test (Due to a bet with a friend who claimed to be incredoibly intelligent, and believe it or not I was invited to join) they said I have a 145 IQ, in the University they told me I had 142, so I believe is more or less accurate.
But the Internet tests are a joke.
Back to the point:
Check a Prog' Forum and you´ll see the people discussing what's the tempo, influences, skills, technicall abbilities, deep lyrics, roots, development of the style, evolution of the sound etc.
Check a Pop forum and you'll read what kind of clothes Britney wears, who is the latest love of Mariah Carey, how cute are the kids from N'Sync (How morons I would say), where they buy their clothes and of course all the scandals.
Check our Discussions not related with music forum and you'll find many members (including 15 years kids) talking about Religion, Politics, discrimination, etc.
I believe this is a prove that most prog fans have a normal - high IQ level, and are way more versatile.

Whatever the average IQ on PA was prior to my joining, now it must be lower by about 10 points .

Why any genuinely intelligent person would
- Believe that intelligence can be quantified
- Brag about their score in some arbitrary test and
- Join one of the amateur eugenics societies masquerading as a high IQ club
is completely beyond my comprehension.
But then, I've always been a bit of a thicko.

No IQ test will give you a defnitive score. You need to take several IQ tests and then calculate a mean average. Practice does not, however, make perfect! I should know, I've done quite a few. They are interesting for showing you your strengths and weaknesses. But, an IQ score score will not be a measurement of your human qualities, such as kindness, honesty, warmth, etc, which are more important anyway aren't they?

I must admit that I did not read the post from Kirklott and others properly and reacted accordingly (maybe a personal IQ problem)
Maidenrulez and Kirklott are probably right about saying that the IQ of progrock lovers is above the average IQ. And I expect that the IQ of people liking Classical music, jazz music, world music or the singer-songwriter genre is also above average. But do you think there is a type of music that is loved by people with a less than average IQ?

No one in this thread has said anything to the contrary.

The sexist angle. How trendy.
Again, no one said this. And to the contrary, my wife is part of a book group, I'm part of a mountain biking group. So does this indicate women are more intelligent than men?

So all in all, I think the idea that Prog lovers have a higher IQ than people liking other music is not true. |
Im pretty sure we would get a result above the average if we IQ-tested the whole community here...but as i said im sure you can find a guy with 170 in iq and likes abba and so on and im not saying that all intelligent people listen to prog but the average intelligence for proggers is higher than the average population...And you dont really know if your friends is intellligent do you
Aslo i has been proven that men has a higer average IQ than women
