I know you don't want to scare her, but if she likes funky stuff, you've got to give her some Gentle Giant (they're the funkiest prog band). But obviously, do so with CAUTION!

Gong always struck me as a group that a girl would dig. Thats not implying anything by me, I love them to death.

Run Lisette by Glass Hammer is very accesible. Misplaced Childhood by Marillion is also might work

Put some Barry White when you're with her. Put prog for the times that you're alone at the bathroom...

And above all, is punk

Guess I'm lucky with this- most of my close friends love prog, and my girlfriend has exactly the same taste in music as I do.

Most girls I know liked Renaissance when I played it for them. Probably because the music is beautiful and there's a female vocalist they could identify with.
My girlfriend loves Peter Gabriel, but doesn't like a lot of early Genesis, especially The Musical Box (my favorite of their songs), because it scares her. But she kind of likes The Lamb. She also doesn't like Yes for some reason, except for some of the eighties stuff :(.
She sort of likes Opeth though, although she has to be in the mood for it. Actually that's how she is with all my music. She has to be in the mood for it to like it.

Hello all of you.
I think that the question "why girls dont like prog" is important question.
I'm a female, not "girl" anymore.
My taste is not a usual "girl" taste, but steal i dont like prog-metal in general.
I assume that: when the prog just developed, weman where still not enough express themselves in music. while males yell their sexuality to death (like Robert Planet, for example), weman in music where still a "good girls" with "quite and nice" music - Jony Mitchel, Keroll King, etc.
It was not until the late 70' when Kate Bush came around. She gave much better presentation of "woman world" including sexuality of course, and many weman emotions...
But - this was not prog anymore.
After that came Bjork, and expanded the woman possibilites to express themselves... she quite close to prog i think, but it's defenitly not prog.
Then came PJ Harvey -WOW What a woman... what a presentation of weman world... just listen to "little fish big fish swimming in the water, come right here and give me my daughter"... but - not prog at all. blues stuff.
MABY IN THE FUTURE, if there will be a band, with weman singer like these singers, that could express herself, in prog band - maby than.
I dont consider here prog bands with "nice" woman singer.
IF someone know about such a band - let me know.
CHEERS !!!

My GF is into stuff like Dave Matthews, Sublime, Rap, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Radiohead (thank god)... so i got her into this stuff
Yes - Heart of the Sunrise, I've Seen All Good People
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing, Lazarus
Dream Theater (i force her to listen to everything!)
The Beatles
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (we watched Dark Side of Oz & she loved it)
Rush - 2112, Xanadu, The Trees
*** I think chill/nice songs from prog bands usually work as good segues - my sis started like some Dream Theater when she heard Solitary Shell, now she's borrowed Octavarium and will slowly work her way into the genre (hopefully)

Strangers passing in the street by chance two separate glances meet and I am you and what I see is me. And do I take you by the hand and lead you through the land and help me understand the best I can

I guess Harmonium should be a winner, unless she has no musical taste
and is completely closedmind, for which you should dump her anyway.

Glass Hammer has great prog that girls like. Ditto with the following bands:
-- Mostly Autumn
-- White Willow
-- California Guitar Trio
DISCLAIMER: That's the extent of my prog collection that my wife will
tolerate. Your mileage may vary.

You guys are trying too hard- they will hear the stuff you like and hopefully pick up on it - failing that just accept that people should celebrate DIFFERENCES in people
