I listen to the music mostly, myself. However, I do look at the lyrics in the booklets while I listen to them. I understand what some of the songs are saying. I will agree that Back in NYC it is hard to understand what Pete is saying.

I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the lyrics, Peter Gabriel isn't understandable on most of 'The Lamb,' especially 'Back In NYC.'

My user name and signature is based on them.  NOTHING beats the lyrics in Genesis tunes.  Supper's Ready, The Lamia, The Colony Of Slippermen, Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, One For The Vine...it's nothing short of magnificent.
My grip must be flipping
Cos his handshake keeps slipping
My hopes keep on dipping
And his lips keep on smiling all the time

Perhaps this thread should be in the main prog lounge??

I like Gabriels lyrcis, but in the case of any band it's the  music I listen to over lyrics. Every now and then a lyricist comes along who is worth listening to, I guess. Gabriel is one, as well as Peter Hammill, Fish, and Neil Peart.

I especially like the lyrics on 'The Lamb..'

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I love their lyrics too, but don't really understand them

Usually when I listen to music I pay attention to voice more than the lyrics and the fact that I don't understand them doesn't bother me. When I listen to Italian prog, I don't understand anything, and still I enjoy it as much as English sung music. Peter Gabriel has one of the greatest voices in prog, and that's what matters to me the most

I love Genesis' lyrics, at least during the gabriel and early collins era.  I know most of the songs' lyrics by heart.  I'm not sure who my favorite lyricist is, but I'm sure it's between Banks (Firth of Fifth, Time Table, Mad Man Moon, Seven Stones, Burning Rope, etc.) and Gabriel (Supper's Ready, Musical Box, the entire album The Lamb, except for the Light Dies Down).  Although I also like Rutherford's lyrics (especially Fountain of Salmacis, Ripples, Eleventh Earl of Mar), Hackett's lyrics (Entangled, For Absent Friends, Blood on the Rooftops), and Phillip's lyrics (Dusk and Visions of Angels).

When you say understand the lyrics, do you mean understand the words that are coming out of gabriel's mouth or understand the meaning behind the words?

Shouldn't this be in the main prog lounge and not in tech talk?

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?
