Just a note that my list includes Steven Wilson only because it's shown on Mike's AP site as a 2009 release but is apparently a 2008 release. (I don't track these things!)

Corrected! You may want to adjust your 2008/2009 releases Smile

I'm currently cleaning up these issues, there's about 1500 releases in the AP database where the year differs between AP, PA and RYM. It's less than 2% of all the releases listed, and I'm fixing the higher profile releases first. I'll also announce the changes in the main thread in prog polls.

Regarding Insurgentes in particular: Here's the different release dates. Most releases where in 2009, but apparently two special editions were released in advance in November 2008. https://musicbrainz.org/release-group/b1c5ea39-8f96-355b-bfe4-84a7805db75f

I didn't see the "other" option on this poll until I had already clicked Magma, which is an amazing album. But my favorite all time studio album was released in 2009. Exivious' self-titled album will be hard to bump from the top. Still sitting in Tech/Extreme for some reason.

Hi! You need to export the list to my counting thread to link your AP account to your PA forum account. Smile

^ Love Avanti! Wonderful album. Was one of my two two albums of the year then and remains one of my favourite albums. Miriodor was the first contemporary "prog" band that I really got into (in 2004) as before that I was so 60s and 70s focused and Avanti! is my favourite Miriodor album. It's more accessible Miriodor actually, I find. I had hoped for that album to get some love in this topic.

I read this review at rateyourmusic of it which manages to pooh pooh Miriodor, Lynch and jazz.:

If the director David Lynch was a prog band, he would be Miriodor. Both are just as weird. And boring. And overrated. If you overwhelmingly like jazz, you'll have at least a chance to like Avanti!. I happen to hate jazz and that's why I can't stand Miriodor either. To my ears this is just clatter and rattle. And the saxophone sounds at times like a dying cat. Saxophone is the instrument that has done most harm to my prog albums...

I know who I would like to "lynch".

I should not speak for Mike, especially as I tend to get things wrong, but I think that if you are not registered logged in user (A guest) then you might more-so want to copy your list here. I'm happy to see people post as many lists as they like. Won't take away from the thread for me at all. I have dropped eight of my faves in the poll, my top 11 in the OP, and my exported top 20 from Awesome Prog. If you have an account at RYM and are logged-in, and stick with the same browser?, it should be fine for updating?

Never mind, kindly disregard/ignore, the Mike man has spoken.

I've listened about ten albums from the list...

Miriodor  deserves  a vote.

I also love Riverside and Maudlin of the Well.

^ Nice list! Would be awesome to see it added to the combined chart at AP. The poll result here is also interesting, with one vote per user. At AP each user has 20 votes and can add any 2009 release they like Smile

I'll vote for Present for this list. Lost of very close contenders, including Magma, Leprous, Mars Volta.

I have a distinct memory of listening to Present one of the first times sitting on my couch with my roommate and boss while we all-night-coded a game to be ready for release for the iPad launch. My boss looked at me like I was crazy when it came on and my roommate, who was used to my taste in music by then, just kind of rolled his eyes. A different time.

My actual favourite of the year is not in this poll though, it is Number Seven by Phideaux, I know they have been the top/near the top for a few years and this is the album that started all that. I doubt I rated it that highly back then, but over the years this has been such a sticker, I've probably listened to it more than any other from that year.

Destined Solitair (Beardfish) was probably the one I considered my top at the time and it's still in a very resilient #2 position, it was a very strange/elastic album but very good.

A few other good ones:
Alec K Redfearn and the Eyesores - The Blind Spot
Cheer-Accident - Fear Draws Misfortune
The Dear Hunter - Act III
Devin Townsend Project - Ki
Devin Townsend Project - Addicted
Fiery Furnaces - I'm Going Away
Gazpacho - Tick Tock
miRthkon - Vehicle
Secret Green - To Wake the King
Shadow Circus - Whispers and Screams
Simon Steensland - Fat Again
Wobber - Afterglow
Zu - Carboniferous

This was the first year I ever put in effort to exploring albums from a specific year, but because streaming wasn't a thing I hadn't yet hit the point of over-exploring. As a result I formed an attachment to quite a bit of music from this year, and I have a very soft spot for it. It was a very different time in my life that I enjoyed very much and I miss quite a bit, and thinking about the music brings back a lot of good feelings.

I voted for Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré and to be honest that is my favourite prog album of 2009... but since Animal Collective are included on Awesomeprog I feel compelled to put them on the number 1 spot in my list :P
I could see that Natural Snow Buildings album growing on me quite a bit but I feel like it warrants a more attentive listen from me first.

1. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
2. Magma - Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré
3. Mastodon - Crack The Skye
4. Sax Ruins - Yawiquo
5. Kurai - Kurai
6. Ozric Tentacles - The Yumyum Tree
7. Cab - Theatre De Marionnettes
8. UKZ - Radiation
9. Wayne Krantz - Krantz Carlock Lefebvre
10. Liquid Trio Experiment 2 - When The Keyboard Breaks: Live In Chicago

Voted for Riverside. I still need to put together my list and will be a while as I go through the 2010s. So maybe in a couple of months. 😆

I only know a small number of these, from which I probably like Aranis most. I have a weak spot for The Whirlwind, I can hear so much joy in it that they had playing this.

The best albums i have from this year are non-prog. Knive by Svarte Greiner and Tyondai Braxton's Central Market beat all prog albums by some distance in my book.

Tortoise's  Beacons of Ancestorship and Buried Alone - Tales of Crushing Defeat by Knifeworld are two very good prog albums.
