^ The three albums are:
Believe - The Wyrding Way Opeth - The Last Will and Testament Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "No Title as of 13 Feb..." The GY!BE album is the most interesting, I will give it a vote.

Vote if you have a favourite if those three or want to mention an other. More interesting to me than if you voted is what those three albums are and if you have a favourite from the year. You know me, more interested in the commentary and a details oriented guy. :) But more than that, just follow your heart in whatever you do here if you can, I suggest. Thanks with whatever you decide.

Nice. After the results are in I will be looking closer at individuals lists. Somehow I have not wanted people's lists to affect me very much when it comes to PA's Album of the Year exhibitions. That said, I have peeked at some lists, including yours. It was in part because of you that I checked out the Tigran. And why I checked out the Present and Sleepytime (well, due to your comments). That's good stuff to listen to in the right headspace and mood for me.
I definitely have some serious listening to do. SInce you brought up Vylet Pony, I'm listening to "Sludge" right now and loving it! Awesome. Thanks for mentioning it. :) It really hits my sweet spots.
I wish I had until Spring or summer to refine my list. I realise that I still have plenty of serious listening to to feel at all ready for this. That said, i know my list will never be definitive. I will keep on coming across great-for-me-stuff from this year and many years to come if things go reasonably well.
And I have yet to listen to that. So much music, so many years, so little time. And I'm one of those who does not want to listen to music every day (I'm a freak), but on those days I do (most days) it can be such bliss, such an emotional and such a joyous ride. I mentioned somewhere that I hoped to have my list done by March, but that's looking more like May. Oh spring!
So I just went with my favourite from your list and that's Present over Greco Bastian. |

My top three were albums by Pond, Yang, and Into the Glasshouse. The order is interchangeable. From the list, Present, Compassionizer, The Smile, and Tigran Hamasyan are in my top 20 or so. Still rate last year higher. Also coming in late is the album by Vylet Pony. A few tracks are just okay to me, but the two long tracks really stand out as among the best tracks of the year.

The second half of the list is my current top 12 (or 13 since there are two The Smiles) at Awesome Prog. Most are not in PA and so won't count for the actual AOTY event. I really do think I'll really like the Sleepytime and Present with more spins. Just a few days to go until the submissions part of the AOTY event concludes. My choices... Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "No Title as of 13 Feb..." The Smile - Wall of Eyes OR Cutouts Tapir! - The Pilgrim Julia Holter - Something in the Room She Moves Kimbanourke - Binjari St. Vincent - All Born Screaming samlrc - A Lonely Sinner Tigran Hamasyan - The Bird of a Thousand Voices Mount Eerie - Night Palace Mount Kimbie The Sunset Violent Xiu Xiu - 13" Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Edited by Logan - 20 hours 8 minutes ago at 20:38 |

Not sure if I can spot yours (I know 1 for sure) but Tapir, Beth Gibbons & Tigran Hamasyan would all be in the list for possible votes. I came late to the last 2 and still getting to know them. |

^ Had I made this poll like the 2023 one, which I think a better approach, the Sleepytime Gorilla museum album would have taken a prominent place in this poll.
My particular choices are all not only voteless but commentless thus far, but then I know my favourites commonly don't align very much with the tastes of most at PA. Nothing wrong with that, there's room for all sorts of niches here. :) |

^ Thanks.
Geordie Greep's is the only album I have heard of your mentions. I have it at number 22 right now, but it could be higher. My ranking is quite arbitrary. I plan to see him in concert on May 11 in Vancouver. I have 40 albums in my list and I have only listened to maybe ten more in full. Heard bits and pieces of many more of course Even so, that feels like a lot. I do wish some more people would contribute to the Album of the Year "event", and I think it's great that people are being exposed to new music, but it's great that as many PA members are participating as are. I do think it's important to support these creative endeavors by buying albums, merch, going to concerts (easier for some of us than others... location, finances, health...) and even by sharing what one likes in the forum which helps with promotion. Reviewing is great, but I am so bad at it. Edited by Logan - 20 hours 44 minutes ago at 20:02 |

I listened to about 90 albums last year which is far too many. It was only towards the end of the year that I discovered a few albums that needed a lot more attention namely Mangrove - A Bridge To Fiction and Azure - Fym. I am genuinely surprised that latter album hasn't garnered more attention but I'm still trying to digest it as it's just shy of 80 minutes. I'm not sure it was given any sort of physical release but if it had I would happily swap my vinyl copy of Frost* - Life In The Wires for it.
In the end I plumped for Swedish post metal band A Swarm Of The Sun - An Empire just ahead of Weather Systems - Ocean Without A Shore at the head of my list. Geordie Greep - The New Sound would have been my favourite album of the year if it had been a little shorter. In the end it outstays its welcome a bit at the length it's at. Jupiter Fungus and Beardfish releases were the others that made up my top 5 prog albums although I also loved Mdou Moctar's heavy north African shredding a whole lot on A Funeral For Justice. The rest of my top ten is mostly made up of French artists/ bands and they couldn't be more different! Tom Penaguin doing Canterbury just across the English channel as well as Slift's weird but wonderful Ilion and Orange Blossom's captivating world beats on Spells From The Drunken Sirens. Nothing much else stood out really. Solid releases (but nothing special) from stalwarts Big Big Train, Izz and Focus. I also discovered some Krautrock I like from Bristol band Beak>. |

I like classic Solaris and classic Focus.
The poll question is "What is your favourite 2024 studio album?" meaning your preference, what you particularly appreciate and enjoy, what is "best for you" from what you know. Asking what is best from a global perspective does not make early as much sense to me as asking, "What is an album from 2014 that you particularly enjoy?" I mean it is so subjective and none of us have heard every release of the year. While I am not one of those who claims it's all subjective as I have seen from some at this forum, and that there is no way to determine better in music (I think intent matters, expectations can matter, one can judge performance / aptitude, there are conventions and one can determine quality to whatever extent within specific frameworks), I think some go too far in thinking that they can be the arbiters of what is good and has merit when there are so many ways to appreciate music. Taste is subjective, people have biases, some value their own assessments, methodology and analyses too highly, one can approach music from different angles. Suffice to say, I prefer to talk about preference/ taste/ what one enjoys and what excites one. :) I care about what people are passionate about commonly. I like Bent Knee, but I have not listened to that album yet.
Not familiar with those releases, but since you mentioned "twin peaks", RIP David Lynch and RIP FBI Deputy Director Gordon Cole. Fire walk with me... |
