I started to compile a list at AP, but found it didn't have any Stephan Thelen or SONAR in its database. Then I was going to handwrite a list, but found it too time consuming. So maybe next year...

^ I agree. Having listened to 200+ releases of 2024, although my tolerance for "sounding similar" is probably higher than yours, there seem to be fewer releases which really stand out as unique than last year.

Hi,

I'm still listening, but in reality, I am also turning off more stuff than I ever have, because so much of it sounds the same as many other bands.

I'll try to make a list of things I am/have enjoyed, though so far, it's not as good a list as I can remember from last year.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

^ I'm slightly annoyed by the fact that even though their label responded to my request for a pre-release review copy (or stream), I never received any. Mostly angry at the "Angry Metal Guy" who did receive one LOL

Didn't know Godspeed had an album out. I wonder how much Opeth will move the needle? The general release date is coming soon (24 November) although I note that it's already getting reviews from those with presumably pre-release copies. Looking forward to it.

I'd say the deadline could be January 31 2025 Smile

Like I said above, there's a lot to explore. I've been exploring 2024 since January and I'm still discovering gems like this one (which I found today) every week Smile

What's the deadline on this? I don't really want to compile any definitive list until the year is actually over.

^ Thanks Mike. Yes, Frant1c a spin off from Nine Skies - took a few listens that one, but very enjoyable indeed once it had sunk in. Not on PA yet though, but I did submit here for appraisal (still waiting I think). I'm going through some of the other list submitted and am now playing Plantoid - Terrapath - 'tis nice so far.

^ Yes indeed, when you have an AP account, once you submit your first list here the accounts are linked, and you can submit at AP simply by clicking a button. Cool

You can verify your list at AP here:

Edit: Nice list! Checking out the Frant1c release, it was the only one from the list I had not heard yet.

After seeing richardh's list above I realised I've missed a couple off mine. I've changed it at AP and resubmitted it. Is that all I need to do for the new additions to count? I have to admit AP makes doing these sort of things so easy to do. Thanks @MikeEnRegalia.

To those who look for inspiration: Take a look at the combined chart so far. You can narrow it down by genre, and for each release you can see who voted for it. Each entry is linked to external websites like Spotify, Youtube and Bandcamp. If you create an AP account you'll also be able to "bookmark" releases for exploration, or mark them as hidden.

My take on 2024 so far: Less impressive than 2023 for sure, but there are tons of awesome releases. I've listened to almost 200 releases of 2024 and currently have about 50 of them rated higher than 8.5/10. There's a lot to discover!

I'm not participating either. I probably will come up with a top five eventually and post it. Hey maybe ten, but it hasn't been the greatest year like the last few in my opinion. Still I'm excited over the ones I like. And looking forward to the results of course.

Up to you, of course, but you still have plenty of time before they will need to be in for tallying.

I find it nice to see people's lists even if few and even if they choose not to officially participate.  And I value giving the albums exposure that we like, regardless (especially can be helpful for the little-known names).  Maybe you already posted some of your faves from this year in this topic already: https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=132978 I basically used my list there to update my list for this topic.

Most years I have been trying to play catch up, but thanks to how things went last year, I ended up discovering new albums from this year throughout the year.  My issue is now having to suggest and add bands to PA (that's just not an interest of mine) if I want them to count for the official tally   Since I have COVID again and can't do much else, and will be getting very busy again, maybe I will get around to suggesting some very soon for PA inclusion.
