Kate Bush and Bjork are super heavyweights in my musical world. The bronze medal goes to Patti Smith in quite some distance.

^ My pleasure
![]() I'm listening to it at the moment. I love the track Some Journey especially but every song is great and the production is perfect. I went off her a bit when she adopted a more 80's production style for her second album Solitude Standing. I had a look on Wiki for any interesting trivia. A couple of things stand out. She was the first female artist to headline Glastonbury (1989). That's really interesting as they were crediting Shania Twain with that accolade at this years festival! I suppose Glasto wasn't big enough in 1989 to be significant. She's also been tagged as the 'Mother Of The MP3' due to her song 'Tom's Diner' being used as a test during the creation of the MP3 format. Not sure how proud she should be of that! EDIT - apparently I didn't read the word 'almost' before 'became the first female artist to headline Glastonbury'. So she didn't but still there is a further fun fact that she played her set wearing a bulletproof vest due to a death threat from an obsessive fan.

I have not heard Alanis Morrisette and Suzanne Vega music beyond some stuff on the radio and I think I heard my friend's dad playing a Vega album in the car decades ago as we drove down from his holiday home at Whistler. I'm a big folkie. I'm much more of a folkie at heart than a rocker. I often gravitate to psychedelic folk, chamber folk, Indie folk, folktronica etc. and I like plenty of hippyish folk. I opted to put on Susanne Vega's debut, and wow, this is very good, and I love the folk in it (and I'm big on dream poppy music). If I do another such poll again, she will be in it.

Kate Bush
Enya Bjork I think that Alanis Morrisette and Suzanne Vega deserve a mention. I love both their debut albums. They failed to top them unfortunately but that must partly be because they were so good. I don't listen to the 'hippy folk' of Joan Baez or Joni Mitchell or even Carly Simon (probably the most commercial of the 3) but I respect them (actually I don't listen to folk music in general). My knowledge of female artists is generally very poor has to be said.

Thanks gents. I wonder for so called-solo singer-songwriters what
might seem the most obvious omissions? In the male one I had meant to
include another, and often there are omissions that make me think "duh",
how could I not think of that? Here is the list I made based on 2010-up releases I appreciate -- a few having releases I love from earlier as well. Maria Bobbitt-Chertock (aka Maria BC) Taja Cheek (aka L'Rain) Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) Pan Daijing Alexandra Drewchin (aka Eartheater, aka Trinity Vigorsky) Beth Gibbons Polly Jean Harvey (aka PJ Harvey) Kristin Hayter (aka Lingua Ignota) Julia Holter Jenny Hval Yaya Kim Natalie Laura Mering (aka Weyes Blood) Xandra Metcalfe (aka Uboa) Camila Moreno Martha Skye Murphy Joanna Newsom Agnes Obel OR Angel Olsen Lane Shi Otayonii (aka otay:onii) Chloé Pelletier-Gagnon (aka Klô Pelgag) Melody Prochet (aka Melody's Echo Chamber) Emma Ruth Rundle Susanne Sundfør Isabelle Thorn (aka Dear Laika) Anna von Hausswolff Chelsea Wolfe ![]() |

This is the second poll I have made with female artist names that focuses on singer-songwriters -- some would have greater input from others than others and be more independent than others.... In the first poll I focused on artists with releases from 2010 up that I really like, and in this on other names with earlier releases I really like. Some of the ones in the last poll would have releases from earlier decades that I like. I might do a third one that focuses more on female singers from bands, so for instance Siouxie of the Banshees, Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins, maybe Beth Gibbons again (she was in the first poll) due to Portishead, maybe Jarboe again with Swans, and Catherine Ribeiro with her "groups" (originally wanted to put her here). Here is direct youtube link to playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4JoN2E02fTVrf_YKUEU-JB3 Feel free to vote no matter how familiar you are with the artists. Multiple votes are enabled. Please vote for up to three (or more if you really want to) artists. Here is the past poll: 26 Female Artists with 2010-up Releases I Love It got very little response, but this one would be much more popular, especially for Kate Bush who is a veritable Queen of Shrubbery. And feel free to mention any others that you like (not focusing on bands) not in either of these polls. I like to get the word out on what I like, and happy to see others doing so.
