Gong You is definitely Space Rock however it's important to acknowledge that about 3 of the pieces are right out of a Play...and theatrical. With lyrics like "Cops at the door!""No cops at the door!" or "What a surprise..she looked around for Zero but he lost his eyes in the fruitcake"
After the build up of the Om riff Daevid Allen sings "Maybe you don't know what you know..ya know?" Is all theatrical and a cross between a Beat Poetry and the jerk..jerk affect of dancers on West Side Story. Edited and played on its own it might not give the impression that it is part of a Space Rock album. Much of the storytelling beginning with Magick Brother then Camembert Electrique and the Gong trilogy is a presentation of the Gong mythology that Daevid Allen had been writing for years Some people are turned off by its style and content. They might enjoy Sprinkling Of Clouds or generally like the overall Jazz Rock jamming combined with space Rock but cannot and will not ever relate to the story of the planet Gong. They often end up enjoying Gazueze! more..which is fantastic and they were some of the greatest musicians in the universe or the planet Gong. Some people I crossed paths with in the 80s who had listened to Gong in college during the 70s claimed that it was something to do with drug taking and that they grew out of it and would never listen to Gong again. I've been listening to Gong for 40 plus years...I like 2032 and I See You...Shape shifter...Gong 2000..etc. For me Gong is relevant in my life now and certainly not a teenage angst rehabilitated. |

Hi, In my book, the band itself (GONG) was not exactly just about one or two cuts or their size, although when they found something neat they seemed to expand it, but almost all of the longer stuff was left to a lot of their solo albums and experiments. GONG, basically, was about the story and its music is the driving force. All in all, the whole thing is a bit on the Zen side of things, and the short stuff is, often, a transition and the story moving along. The trilogy is what all this is about, and yes, the long pieces are far out and it's hard to not appreciate the two pieces that were side one of the LP for "YOU", which flowed together incredibly, and showcases the Pierre Moerlin amazing talent in carrying things along with varying times and touches. As the Daily Doug said ... it was weird (I don't think he has the guts to do "YOU"), and he admitted that the musicianship in the band was way above average ... "these folks know how to play" ... which, in reality is what so many of the folks coming out of the Canterbury area was all about ... as evidenced by all the folks coming through/out of the Soft Machine and Caravan folks ... just about all of which were, likely, professors in music. Mike Howlett, even was in charge of a music school in Australia, I believe, along with also producing a few things ... and he was the bass player that never made a mistake and and had a touch that was ... not even enjoyed or appreciated by many who think that the stars are the players that show off ... Mike just does his thing, and the many times I saw him, it was always "there" and an immense pleasure to watch such accuity in the level of concentration on the music ... he didn't play to the drummer ... he played to the music, and this was important when you had Pierre Moerlin doing it, who was also way up and above a lot of drummers in terms of his musicianship and ability. He, sadly enough, didn't live long enough to get appreciated for it a lot more.

Whilst I had listened to Hawkwind, I had not listened to Gong. I listened to the listed album by them and liked it. I didn't care much about the shorter numbers on the album, but the longer tracks like Isle of Everywhere and Master Builder are impressive.

I am listening to this album right now and like it's eclectic blend of instruments, quite a bit of Moog on this, I guess. Though the 'singing' is just speaking of words. The concept of linking one song to per astrological sign hasn't aged well, IMO. I wish it was more instrumental in nature.

Hi, I'm not sure that me making suggestions would help ... in many cases, I would imagine that the context with which these things are presented is the most important issue of all ... though I would not exactly like to redo what Guy Guden did one time in his show on the early days ... he played IO and then Astronome Domine and a couple of other pieces, all kinda over each others in seque and all of a sudden you are hearing the American Anthem ... and all you could think if ... this is my inspiration, and it could be thought of as space rock, but in the end, it is rock music is my source and anthem. Likewise, Guru Guru could have been added with Ax Gernrich stuff in their early days going absolutely bananas on stage and giving it titles to the pieces that suggested space ... but were the best JH ever done on a stage ... no one could create such images on an electric guitar at the time, though it is said that there were a couple of folks in Germany that were doing solo guitar stuff alone on stage with the same ideas and thoughts though I find these more exploratory than I do meaningful as anything, regardless of what we think. AND, later, Guru Guru also gave us a piece that is far out ... and preceded the fall of the Wall in Berlin ... in the TANGO FANGO album, when "Das Lebendige Radio" made some serious satirical comments about the music in East Germany ... which in the end, was turned off with feedback to give us some rock'n'roll ... and the idea that the schlagger of the old days was not the music of the future. Again, the context is the value of the whole thing. I like, and appreciate, almost all of the selections, but in the end, the context of the show will end up being boring for me ... too much of the same thing ... a sort of "Classic Hits" on almost all the FM radio stations in America ... listening to it over and over again, makes me want to ... yeah! In my own radio show 24 years ago, I did a full 2+ hours of Hawkwind, and couldn't help mention that what was called "outer space" ended up being replaced by "inner space" ... and I kinda think that came about because we were all BORED with the film 2001, and those days of ideas about space and the universe ... and the idea that things had to be over the top to get folks to think about it some. It is here that Michael Moorcock, for me, became a cartoon, and no longer a viable and enjoyable read when compared to Arthur C. Clarke for example. But let me tell you what an experience it was to see that film on the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood ... in 180 degrees and with some amazingly insane sound ... you not only saw it ... you felt it ... and you will remember it forever. Later seeing the first Star Wars in a theater with 700 speakers, many under your chair kind of thing, you will also remember that rumbling and all the sounds in the last 30 minutes of that film ... and that was in space, though we won't call it space anything at all ... the imagination alone gave us the rest ... but your butt rumbling is ... yeah!

Mort Garson may have been the first composer to create occult albums using the Moog Synthesizer...but with a distinctive style regarding mechanical rhythms, poly chords, and oddball signature lines that revolved around a theme and subject matter of the occult. This was pursued in 1969 by Beaver And Krause, but only in a few pieces featured on the album Ragnarok. "CIRCLE X" being the closest with similarities to Mort Garson. The idea was to create a entire album on the occult using the Moog Synthesizer and Mort Garson was the most accomplished at that. There were others such as Ruth White and her 7 Trumps Of The Tarot and Pinions...which is very dark but somewhat differs from Black Mass and The Unexplained. Keith Emerson in the early 70s was writing dark pieces in ELP such as The Barbarian but his usage of the Moog Synthesizer to create dark music was quite different from Garson. On a personal level I observed keyboardists in the early 70s who were Electronic or had played in Progressive Rock bands reproducing some of the sound and style heard on Black Mass and Perhaps it's just Garson's essence and his overall influence. Hi, I run a radio program in Belgium (progscopie) and our last show was about cosmic sixties: so space rock but made in the sixties. I'll make another one next thursday as we still have plenty to present. Any suggestion of titles that are space rock AND from the sixties (like Interstellar Overdrive and 3rd Stone from the sun which are for me good examples). Thanks Romain

Hi, This, if anything, shows how much Simon House was valuable to Hawkwind, and helped make the music flow a lot more than we give it credit for. Simon House first appeared in "Hall of the Mountain Grill" and specially in the first side of the LP, made that album special in just a few tracks. If you check the lyrics, in many ways this is about how they see a lot of folks thinking about Hawkwind ... and their desire to let go of that illusion ... ... So you think the time is past, The life you lead will always last Chaotic fusion's of your soul, Down below that rocky knoll Through the clouds an open sky, The wind flows through your watering eyes The sounds are pitched to draw you On your never ending journey On The edge of time, The edge of time, The edge of time (... and I probably would add a monkey saying ... you are stoned ... you are stoned ... a la 2001!!!)

Hi, I think your idea is not right ... take away Michael Moorcock, and we likely would not give a damn about the whole thing, and consider it stupid. And Hawkwind, did try to get rid of Michael Moorcock, and finally was able to do so (got him back with Warrior ... ), but the idea, and thought of it not associated with "space" seems to be something that most fans do not appreciate much. All it takes is "Hall of the Mountain Grill" and then "Astounding Sounds/Amazing Music" to realize that there was a lot more to Hawkwind than "space" that we refuse to let go. Both the long cuts in AS/AM are not about "space" at all ... and this might be one of the reasons why some folks kinda quit Hawkwind by that time, as Reefer Madness is seriously anti-dope, and Steppenwolf is also very serious about our doped up ideas about mind and body! Just like the book! The "magic theater" is the idea, not the reality! And we think that the "space" illusion of it all is better and more important ... please stop being a stoned kid showing your youth. . Hawkwind, by 1976 and such had grown tired of the space idea. Nik Turner, kinda took it with him some and created some nice stuff until he passed away, but ... but ... but ... it also means that anything stated and said was not important, because the idea of "space" (influenced by the moon events at Nasa and 2001, the film) was more important. Maybe if you had seen 2001 at the Cinerama Dome and the large stoned crowd, you would have gotten a better idea of it all, and I think that Hawkwind had grown up some ... beyond just being a stony farm band!

I love this live footage of Hawkwind from 1990, "The Golden Void," just like on (their best, imo) album "Warrior on the Edge of Time." 🌀 This is an excellent version of one of Hawkwind's best songs and without a doubt the stellar point of this performance. 🌟 🌌✨ This can be found on the "Classic Rock Legends" DVD.
