Hymn: one of the greatest prog anthems ever. Yeah!! Not so harmless after all. |

Suicide? A strangely uplifting song, given the subject matter, but who else besides Barclay James Harvest could make a song about suicide sound cheerful? |

Not so "Harmless" after all - not when BJH perform such evergreen classics as "Child of the Universe", and not forgetting their other notable prog anthems, such as "Hymn", "In Memory of the Martyrs" and "Poor Man's Moody Blues"..... I could go on, so I will:- "Mocking Bird", Medicine Man", and "Titles" - the best tribute to The Beatles until the magical "Mystery Tour" by YES came along over forty years later. Barclay James Harmless? Not likely! Not when you've heard the magnificent Summer Soldier performed Live! |

Hi,
Paul ... you STINK. This thread ended up with me listening to BJH for at least 3 hours while it was over 100 degrees outside! I couldn't even go get under the sprinkler outside!

^ Give me "Harmless" prog ballads any time. I don't like prog that's too challenging.

Hi, Both bands went downhill after a while, so both kinda became a joke. Best nick-name for BJH is Barclay James Harmless. Well deserved, most people know why...

^ Poor Man's Moody Blues maybe, but I've never heard BJH referred to as "poor man's Moody Boors" before.

Hi, In the LIVE album the highlight belongs to the long cuts Summer Soldier and Medicine Man. And you should play them back to back and LOUD ... to enjoy it better! A wonderful band, right from the start ... sadly neglected and thought of as a poor man's Moody Boors ... when in fact, BJH was much more honest and clear about their work, than the other band that became a joke! In the end, no one has looked at how many times they did a show with an orchestra, and if that does not tell you how good their work is to be able to handle that ... you are not listening to music!

This song (they love to sing) didn't quite make it onto my list, but it's on almost everyone and everybody else's list, so here it is.

For this listener, they've only made 7 decent albums:
1. Turn of the Tide: In Memory of the Martyrs 2. Caught in the Light: The Great Unknown 3. Ring of Changes: Ring of Changes 4. Eyes of the Universe: The Song (They Love to Sing) 5. Welcome to the Show: Welcome to the Show 6. Gone to Earth: Spirit on the Water 7. Everyone is Everybody Else: Poor Boy Blues/Mill Boys For those who haven't already guessed, I usually prefer Les Holroyd's songs to John Lees's songs!

1. Everyone Is Everybody Else - Child of the Universe
2. Octoberon - Suicide? 3. North - One Leave Those are the only BJH albums I own and I'm using faulty memory to pick the best songs as I haven't listened to any of these in maybe eight years (?).

I may get mocked for this, but I'm bending my own "rules" to return to their second album Once Again, just so I can include this classic song. |
