A bit of a side note but Lenny Bruce is portrayed for real in the otherwise fiction based TV series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. In the very last episode Midge's manager Suzie visits him at a 1965 gig in San Fransisco to try and pull him away from the dark path he is on. He is lost somewhat and in real life died of a drug overdose a year later. Interesting mix of fiction and fact while Canadian actor Luke Kirby won an Emmy for his portrayal of Bruce.

Actually, it's "Broadway Melody of 1974":

Lenny Bruce declares a truce
And plays his other hand...

Whenever Lenny Bruce is written about or spoken about in any context, the first thing I think of is this song!

Hi,

Sad ... you should hear his voices in The Goons ... it's very different and down right scary as an actor, how someone can switch so quickly and do it right ... the only film example of it that you have was on the ending of "Being There" in an outtake of some sort. But his voices were superb, and when you realize that this was all LIVE RADIO with very few "cuts" (mostly done before the shows by BBC censors and idiots!) ... gives a new meaning to acting, that we don't often get.

Lenny Bruce is good, and his material is important, and in a way this is a very bad comparison, but they both were outstanding on separate ends of the sphere. Peter Sellers, after The Goons, was never really as good, until "Being There", with the exception of the original 3 Pink Panthers. Lenny had the misfortune of being in the USA where what he did was not as appreciated. I think he would have been better in Europe, although I doubt many in the audience would get half of what he was talking about!

^ I've seen Mort live.  He was far from the best.

Mort Sahl invented it and was the best. Carlin has said so multiple times. I have thousands of newspaper articles, audio, video, etc.

I loved Sellers talent, one of the greats of the 20th century.   But Lenny Bruce's incredible bravery and artistry in the face of such opposition, as well as practically inventing the modern standup comedy format, gives him the win.

The dual goes on the dual of the sillyness. Humor is the most powerfull tool in the human kittset, it makes power debuckle and dwindle. Without comedy, there would be a more dire existence. Comedy and music i hell equal asskils and pedagogy... these gents had most of it
