Really good.......for a laugh that is.
Listen to Trout Mask Replica and laugh, if you're not laughing at this album you're a fool.

Me favorite from him is Lick My Decals Off, Baby. But, yes, Trout Mask
Replica is a masterpiece. One of the very few albums that you can only
wonder how such great things can be done. It's pure genius.

And above all, is punk

Do you know Tom Waits - The Black Rider? Only VERY loosely related to Beefheart, but still very in-accessible and strongly recommended.

It's been one of the key albums in my collection since I first got it in the late 70s. It's still hugely influential to this day, and will probably remain so for decades to come. The drumming is remarkable, the interplay between the two guitarists is amazing and Beefheart's voice and free form sax somehow float above it all - the Magic Band was one of the tightest groups ever.
And Lick My Decals Off, Baby surpasses it - amazing stuff.

I've owned it on vinyl since it was released in about 1970, and still listen to it regularly. It's still as fresh and thought provoking as it was 35 years ago.
A 5 star classic!

If he thinks Cap'n Beefheart (arrr!) is hard to get into, then never ever play him any Merzbow..
I love TMR and I wanna get hold of Lick My Decals Off too, it's
addictive stuff once you come to appreciate the amount of effort that
goes into sounding that off-beat.

Of course, I love it.
It's not as bizzare or outthere as some later stuff I have by other artist's.
As suggested above "Lick my decals off" is also a fantastic album as well, it's just TMR was there first.

kind of a joke, my friend loves it, though not for it's musical qualities. it's sort of a running joke, I'll make his computer loop captain beefheart when I leave his house.
But more seriously, I really like the album. I don't know why. I must be insane or something. I guess it's one of those "i dunno" things. You just have to want to like it, and you do. It's just a personality/taste thing. I actually like "Lick my Decals Off" better, it's when he starts using odd time signatures and a marimba, more instrumentals, and a form even more complex than Trout Mask.
