I've been a fan since I was a kid.... I remember listening to "Making Movies" on the way to my grandma's, and by the time we were done listening to both sides, it meant we were about 15 minutes away.

The thing about Dire Straits is, they made the huge mistake of recording the song "Walk of Life". Had it not been for that piece of kitsch, they might have been more accepted, because almost everything else is much more genuine. But it seems "Walk of Life" is the song that most people associate them with. It very often appears in retro 80's playlists. I really like Dire Straits, except that song.

Yeah, but by Making Movies, the cracks were becoming visible.

Has any of you seen The Dire Straits Experience led by saxophonist Chris White?
They play in my hometown Tampere on 24th this month and (although being just cynical and skeptical at first) I began to think I'd enjoy it. |

The only reason to listen to On Every Street is to witness the wonderfull drumming from Jeff Porcaro, and this reccording will be one of hes last reccording of any big rock band session gig before he dies.

I suppose one can't really blame MK and Co for trying to "stretch out," but they clearly tried their hand at going "ultra-pop"...and, although I didn't care for it, it certainly made them pretty big. In fact, they grew so much that MK complained, after their "reunion," that they were "too big" ... and the rest, as they say, is history. I'll have to check out "On The Night." Thanks for mentioning it here, mate. ![]() |

I won't say that I'm a fan but I certainly like their debut album, and Love over Gold, quite as well.

There is a side of DS that I don't really like and it's the fast/jive/jumpy BTW; I should really one day check out On The Night, because I just saw the track list and the length of some of those tracks can reveal interesting interplay or good solos. .
