As the thread starter, let me chip in with my two Euro cents. It has never been my intention that this thread would evolve into something including mutilating corpses and naked virgins. On the toher hand, it is my opinion that on a message board the thread starter does not own the thread, and should therefore not complain about the direction the thread is taking. I was more looking for "so awful you have to laugh" type covers, though.

Ok Manunkind , Sorry I thought you did want to shut it because this thread was started by you. Actually I do not really care about the thread , but I did have a good laugh when I leafed through it! But IMHO , the thread title does warn you enough! |

I don't remember saying anything about closing the thread. Yes, I am offended (or rather disgusted, since I'm sure no one here intended to offend anyone) by a few covers (especially those with willing or unwilling references to paedophilia) and feel that the gory ones (which I find funny, BTW) can disgust some people here. Really, it's all about the physical reaction. Why should people here be subjected to stuff which may literarly make them throw up on the screen? Sure, it's a thread about extremely bad album covers, but come on. I don't want such covers to be deleted, only replaced with links and a word of warning, so that you have a choice. As far as I know two or three covers were so ugly that they were deleted altogether. IMO these should also have been replaced with links. And the title is ambiguous enough - first time I saw the thread I thought it was about ridiculously inept and clumsy covers. And it's the case 90% of the time. Now if it had read "Shocking album covers"... |

^well, he said himself that he knows covers much worse and doesn't wand to post them. He is also a fan of Cannibal Corpse and the likes and he said he takes their covers as "comic book gore"... Doesn't look like someone who likes Cannibal Corpse and Deicide can be offended by that Scorpions cover btw, I posted both Virgin Killer and Cannibal Corpse covers, I can delete them if they bothers you. Most covers there are just hilariously tasteless, not offencive. |

It might be a problem that in some countries some of those album covers might be illegal. In Germany for example, covers showing mutilated human bodies are outlawed. I don't think that this thread will have any legal consequences (nobody really cares) ... but on the other hand it also hasn't any real benefits, so if I were to decide I'd probably delete it. Well this is a ROCK site so Rock album covers are part of it> what this thread does (from what I could read anyway ) is denounce the ugly album cover: some are frankly tasteless , some are funny because theyare tacky and others can be considered offensive by some members> None of those covers have offensed so far (but I am relatively thick-skinned , not just on feedback from my reviews , but also about a lot of things in life) , and I participated in a discussion regarding Scorpion's Virgin Killer and Blind Faith's album for child nudity (not pornography) etc.... Those covers are on public view from rock record buyers and have been for 30 years (in the case of the two mentioned) and it has not caused censorship (except some rare lands)
I recognize there is some bad taste on the thread , but those not thick-skinned enough can always not open the thread - the title is warning you enough (I think!) before you even open it up! So if you think you shall be offended by such a subject , do not open it up!!! Simple as that!! Are those easily-hurt persons, so masochistic that they will open the thread up and gaze at inferno??? Maybe those sensible minds might want to seek psychiatric advice !! I certainly do not mean to hurt Manunkind , who is clearly offended by the thread, but the best thing to do is ignoring the subject. The best/worst thing a thread like this will do is the exact reverse effect: it will bring even more attention to the controversial thread! Maani let this thread open (but he did intervene) and he is a minister (but also a great believer in freedom of speach), so you got one moral person that chose the laissez-faire attitude. |
