I thought Four Moments was a Neo Prog album when I first heard it. I was really surprised when I discovered it was released way back in 1975.

I've just heard the first song on Sebastian Hardie's Four Moments (1975), and found something interesting as it sounded to me pretty much as a forerunner for Neo-Prog.

I'd forgotten Blackfeather and The Master's Apprentices were Australian. I'll add them to my list too.

Don't know enough Australian bands, but two of the greatest prog albums from there (IMO):
Karnivool, Sound Awake and Rainbow Theater, Fantasy of Horses Dead Can Dance also very good, but no standout albums for me. I used to be a Men at Work fanatic in my early teens. Not prog, in spite of the extensive use of flute, but you could argue they have some (mildly) proggy moments, esp on the album Cargo.

I like what I've heard from Caligula's Horse although not knocked out. Some good (but not prog) bands from The Land Down Under
Crowded House (apparently formed in Melbourne although I always thought they were from New Zealand!) Men At Work (the album I have by them is decent) Wolfmother (LZ rip off?!) Rose Tattoo (hard rock band very famous in the seventies/eighties) The Vines (alternative rock band) Tame Impala (my nephew raves about this artist!) don't really like INXS (yawn) or AC/DC (joke 'panto' band in my book) then there's the 'girls'. Natalie Umbruglia , ONJ and Kylie.. good to look at , less so to listen to lol.

The only prog out of Australia I've heard is Caligula's Horse - Bloom...
I absolutely adore it.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

Me three. Question: Do Dead Can Dance really count as an Australian band? Have they ever done an album in Australia, toured Australia, or even live in Australia? Didn't they leave Australia for London in 1982? Hasn't Brendan remained a resident in the British Isles (mostly in Ireland) ever since? Haven't they recorded and released all of their albums from the UK? My Top 10 would be: 1. Sleepmakeswaves …and so we destroyed everything (2011) 2. Stare at the Clouds This Clear Divide (2016) 3. Windchase Symphinity (1977) 4. Karnivool Asymmetry (2013) 5. Arcane Chronicles of the Waking Dream (2009) 6. Anubis 230503 (2009) 7. Sebastian Hardie Four Moments (1975) 8. The Church Untitled #23 (2007) 9. On the Virg Serious Young Insects (1998) 10. Plini Handmade Cities (2016) 11. United Progressive Fraternity Planetary Overload, Part 1 - Loss (2019) 12. Unitopia The Garden (2008) 13. Caligula's Horse In Contact (2017) Edited by BrufordFreak - November 27 2021 at 06:07 |

Not much knowledge here either. I do like King Gizzard's Polygondwanaland but am rather lukewarm on other stuff I heard of them. I could list some 6-8 Dead Can Dance albums, and then I have and like one band not listed yet, Clogs (Stick Music and Lantern). Oh, and We Lost the Sea (Departure Songs), already listed. Didn't know they are Aussies (this may apply to some more in my collection, I did look up the Top Australian albums list on PA but that has only King G and DCD of those I know). This is not much but more than from Spain (nada). ![]() Edited by Lewian - November 25 2021 at 14:44 |

I'm sorry to tell you, Grumpy, that I'm not able to contribute here, as I've so far only found one Australian album that I'm fond of, even I've surely tried. That is Into the Labyrinth (1993) with Dead Can Dance. - It's somehow like that the Australian taste and mine isn't quite in line. ![]() The good news is, though, that the next geographical list, I've planned to do very soon, will be for Latin America. I can also tell you, if I do any more geographical lists, that won't be any European. Happy the Man?
