Thanks to both of you, also for your kind words Nicky. I'm thinking of her a lot today. It wasn't the internet that made me find out - her husband was nice enough to tell me. You're right, in my mind she's there, everything good about our past, but also the painful separation. I'm grateful to know.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Christian.  I'm not sure whether it's a blessing to know, sometimes, when people go to the other side that we've not had close contact with for years, or not.  With the internet, it seems we more often do find out, than in the days of old.  I have a few people who just dropped off the face of the earth, some I feel are here, some I feel, are not.  Of course, she may have been someone you did stay in sporadic touch with, but the loss can still feel profound, either way, as in a way, a part of you also is lost with them.  

I like to think that time is both forwards and backwards, that the past is still there, the present is here and the future is also here, but just not yet.  Somewhere in the past, the times you remember with this person are still happening, hopefully mostly the good ones will be the ones you recall.

So instead of narrowing things down, relistening throws up even more that I like. Now Gino Vannelli, Kings of Leon, Screaming Trees, and Ibeyi make an impression as well, but if I ever want to get down to three, I can't allow them in. Boards of Canada, love that band but hadn't heard this one. I like it but they have better, so rank 6 for them. Weedpecker - Molecules is pretty much to my taste and was a clear candidate for a vote, but must be satisfied with rank 5 as there are four things I simply can't vote around.

Jehnny Beth is probably the best discovery here, what a great atmospheric powerful track! Now I'd never have thought to vote for Bruce Springsteen once, but this one really struck a chord with me big time. An ex-lover of mine has died this year in her fifties. I didn't have contact with her for some years, but would definitely have hoped to meet her further on up the road, but it wasn't to be. I do see, however, with only 3 votes, I don't think it's a good way to determine that is the case.  I can only speak for myself.  I did find the one song more interesting than most of current pop I have had exposure to.  I think many of us stretch the 3 vote thing with honourable mentions and the like.  When one looks over what people said about all of the songs, if they had time to do so, is probably more of a clue of what each individual is more inclined to like, over time.  However, that may be subject to change over time, and the final votes come down to weighing the chosen selection against the other chosen selections, which vary, then, depending.  I am sure it's not a personal thing, we're just comparing apples to oranges sometimes in these polls, even with a theme and some rules.

I know that this is in the first place about sharing and discussing music. However the number of votes does indicate to some extent whether or not people are interested in a certain type of music. In my case nobody voted for my proposal, you see?

The known songs thing isn't something that everyone decides cannot be voted for, it's more of a personal choice.  It is entirely up to the individual what they want to bring.  The idea isn't really to win the most votes, but to share, at least how I see it.  And I have certainly loved several things you have brought to my attention.

I had this Danish singer/band Katinka from the 'Emotional Songs By Female Singers' edition in mind when I chose Ibeyi. Katinka's and maybe a few other a bit poppy songs that appeared in previous polls gave me the impression that my twins might be a good option, esp. because they are quite original as Kees pointed out earlier. It's hard to tell how others saw them but the outcome speaks for itself, I guess. Ibeyi are based in France so I'm not surprised that Kees knew them. But since most people here are from overseas I thought that I could give it a go. My first choice were actually Flora Purim & Airto Moreira but they are relatively well-known so I didn't nominate them. But then again quite a few well-known artists appeared in the line-up which confused me. I  guess it will take some time to find out what you guys are into. I'm not someone who wants to please at any cost but I would like to bring something that might interest you. Smile

Indeed, I did have the twins on my listen-to-again-if-nominated first round.  When I went into 2nd/3rd listens to make decisions, the others just carried more weight for me.  What surprised me was that even though they are kind of a more modern pop sound, I enjoyed them so much, since most often, that doesn't speak much to me, hence, my final decisions.  The introduction by others of new-to-me artists is certainly a draw for me in these polls.

Well, I don't think you should draw the conclusion that Ibeyi didn't find resonance here. I knew them because this song was a minor hit here and had quite some radio/tv play, and I guess most of us like what they convey (a lack of comments may make you think that your suggestion was not appreciated, but since only a few comment on all songs, this does not tell much how all was appreciated by everyone...). I like this song very much and saw a short live tv-show, 30 minutes or so, with them that was really wonderful, but they remain for me - so very subjectively - more a conventional pop act, despite their originality within this domain. Their clip is wonderful, though!

My three choices are:

Jehnny Beth: She is an artist to watch. Only in her mid-thirties, she has had a long musical career, starting as one part of the French indie rock duo John & Jehn and continuing as the front woman of the English all female post-punk band Savages. For her debut solo album “To Love Is to Live” she again joined forces with Johnny Hostile. This album is rich in contrast and shows her diverse musical influences which makes me curious about things to come. She is a demanded artist in the international music scene for a reason (see numerous collabs).

The Neville Bros: I’m a huge fan of classy 70s r&b/funk/soul sounds and the Nevilles are great representatives of that genre. I do appreciate Sly & The Familiy Stone as well but since I have to choose I’ll go for the infectious flow and beat of the first.

Admirals Hard: These guys made me smile, a good reminder that music is there to be enjoyed! A folk band, specialising in sea shanties. They use traditional and modern instrumentation and give this genre a fresh contemporary touch. I also enjoyed The Hank Dogs, some really nice and elegant acoustic folk but again I had to choose so I let therefore the younger generation go first.

Among the not nominated suggestions my absolute favourites were Ian's Theo & Valentin Ceccaldi. You will always get my full attention with modern, avant-garde style jazz, and even more if it is an unusual instrumentation, played with virtuosity like here. A brilliant choice, thanks for sharing, Ian! 

Overall this was an enjoyable listening experience. So thank you all for the music! Sadly my young Cuban twins failed to find resonance here but that didn't discourage me, quite the opposite actually. I will keep introducing new and stylistically diverse artists.which is - at least how I see it - one of the purposes of these great interactive polls. Wink
