Thought I'd remembered this name from a post of yours, Mike. Last night I was in a chat room of a progressive show and one of the people in the band was there. The song, "Life, Death and Cheers," on this release was playing, he said that he wrote the tune about his father, who'd died on his (his father's) birthday, which was also New Year's Day. It explains the juxtaposition of sounds in the piece. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Nolan Potter’s
Nightmare Band: I loved this vivid
and colourful psychedelic rock tune. It was a strong contender for my
podium. It is a pity that we have only three votes, given the vast musical
diversity of this edition. The band is inspired by classic psych rock which in
itself is very positive, but maybe a bit too much for my taste. Hopefully they will continue to develop their sound into
something wholly new, without losing their psychedelic roots.
Roberto Vecchioni: I really appreciate this Italian singer-songwriter
and especially his poetic and often nostalgic lyrics. Normally, it doesn’t matter to me whether
I know an artist or not, but he was in direct competition with Portugal’s
Fausto whom I had not known before. As for my own choice,
well I didn’t expect that in a rock music forum many people would be familiar
with this jazzy track. You guys proved me wrong, and I am glad about that in
some ways. Next time I will try to surprise you, maybe with an artist/band from
outside the English-speaking area. Thank you everyone for the music and your interesting comments and thank you Mike for hosting. I really enjoyed this poll! Edited by Mila-13 - November 14 2021 at 23:28 |

I will add some more comments later but for now this is where my votes will go to: North Sea Radio Orchestra-GBR: A cross-disciplinary chamber
orchestra performing their own compositions, beautifully combining contemporary
classical music styles with folk and rock. This is unique and I want to listen
to more of their music. Am I the only one who was not aware of this fantastic music
ensemble? Le Grand Sbam-FRA: In German we would call this
a “Gesamtkunstwerk” (eng. synthesis of the arts?). Prog rock breaking new ground? A must see/hear for me, absolutely! Fausto Bordalo Dias-POR: How is it possible that I
haven’t heard of this outstanding Portuguese singer-songwriter before? Fausto started
his musical career in the 1970s and grew up in Angola, back then still a Portuguese
colony. I listened to a few of his other songs and was able to recognize his wide-ranging
stylistic influences. Fausto is also a politically and socially committed
artist which captured my interest even more, given the major political changes
in Portugal in the 1970s. Edited by Mila-13 - November 14 2021 at 14:52 |

1. Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band - A Wizard of the World A really enjoyable and multifaceted track so many twists and turns - added to favorites 2. Vanishing Twin - Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life - such a tricky number song since you have to enjoy many minutes before the song comes in but that was all part of it 3. Roberto Vecchioni - "Vorrei" - It may be more conventional but it really still has that extra special composition, musicianship, and passion. And I'd like to count your hair Until the last without making mistakes And at the end Say that they are beautiful And confuse them and start over Close to top 3 Bonny Light Horseman - Bonny Light Horseman The Comet Is Coming - Summon The Fire Battlestations – Silencer A Most Enjoyable Poll Edited by tigerfeet - November 13 2021 at 21:00 |

Just cast my votes and read the preceding two posts. I too had taken The Comet Is Coming and North Sea Radio Orchestra out of competition.
Definitely a strong playlist. I went through once in the order of the poll and then a few times on shuffle. In the end, I settled on a top two. 1. Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band. 2. Bonny Light Horseman Then it became a fierce battle among Vanishing Twin, Gaupa, and Jonathan Hultén. Suiting my mood at this time, my third vote went to... 3. Jonathan Hultén. The other two receive honorable mentions with Bijelo Dugme, Spencer Cullum, and Battlestations. Edited by mathman0806 - November 14 2021 at 04:20 |

Loads of good stuff here.
Le Sbam are mine and I know The Comet Is Coming and North Sea Radio Orchestra very well so will skip them. Vanishing Twins Battlestations Guapa Will probably buy the first two of those.

A great playlist of discoveries for all of us to discover indeed, and another superhard poll. Out of competition, because I know these tracks already: North Sea Radio Orchestra (I have nominated this album as a contender for best album of the decade) and The Comet is Coming. 9 Paper Dolls: This is super beautiful if slightly too familiar for a Sufjan Stevens fan. 8 Le Grad Sbam: This probably takes more time, it's extremely creative and has some very attractive parts but these are sometimes frustratingly cut short, too many "and now for something completely different" moments. 7 Spencer Cullum's Coin Collection: It starts to get very hard to not vote for some of these. I love these mixes where you think you have the musicians around you in your flat. 6 Kuunatic: When I heard this for the first time, I thought, no way I'm not voting for this... but this evening my mood is different, tough luck. 5 Jonathan Hulten: Another vote-worthy one that misses out due to my current mood that draws me away from all that fits all too well with some things I already know. 4 Gaupa: Great pick, any singer that comes close to Bjork must be great, the music reminds me of Chenille's Samen album with another powerful female singer, yeah, the hard rocking ladies. Tough luck that today all "it reminds me of..." candidates end outside the top 3. 3 Fausto: Today it's the surprise factor that is winning, I'd never have thought that the emotional and melodramatic beginning can lead up to this kind of hypnotic chorus. Wow! 2 Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band: Ok, admittedly there are elements here that remind me of (...), too, but overall this is such a glorious positive melodic but still inventive track. 1 Vanishing Twin: *The* discovery of this collection of discoveries! They know what it takes to win me over.

I am happy that "Vorrei", a melodic Italian-style song, with a conventional arrangement, is appreciated, beyond the votes it takes. In this thread I occasionally share simple songs, without any particular eccentricity of arrangement, because I want to share with you the emotions that the melody and the expression of the voice gives me, and it is really nice that the members of an American prog site, who do not they speak Italian, are able to appreciate this too.

1. Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band 2. Spencer Cullum3. Gaupa Honorable mentions: Vanishing Twins Jonathan Hulten Roberto Vecchioni Paper Dolls All of the entries were excellent. I actually enjoyed them all. Unfortunately, Le Grand Sbam, Battlestations and North Sea Radio Orchestra were out of the running for me since I'm already familiar with them, but all three of them were excellent selections.

As said, this makes up for a fantastic playlist. I'm glad that some of my favourites were not nominated, because it would have become quite impossible to get to three votes (this is not a plea to open up to five votes, though!). So, my votes are decided on the question... no, on the decision which ones will find their way into my collection without further due. Others might need further exploration, but, guys 'n gals, this was a tremendous good poll! From the sheer fun of the prog 'n roll of Bijelo Dugme, the great riffs and singing of Gaupa, the avantgardism of Le Grand Sbam, the wonderful melodies and singing of Bonny Light Horseman, Jonathan Hulten, Roberto Vecchioni and Paper Dolls, the modern/Eastern psychedelics of Kuunatics to the wonderful sonic explorations and/or sheer musicality of the others... My votes go to (in order of appearance): - Vanishing Twin - "Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life" - Fausto - "Como um Sonho Acordado" - Battlestations - "Silencer" I actually also wanted Le Grand Sbam and Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band on the podium; I have to listen to their respective albums, but I'm already quite sure they will find their way into my collection too. Glad they were not nominated (I would have been teared apart...), but they will be entering my collection too: Organ Explosion, The KALI Trio, VIRTA and Spooky Cool. These polls are getting expensive...

I just listened to every track, really great selection! There are three tracks that I liked particularly more and I will surely listen to the full albums:
Vanishing Twin - "Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life" Kuunatic - "Titian" (will see if it's a candidate for Psych Rock) Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band - "A Wizard of the World" Oh, and thanks for the comments on my nomination, I'm glad you liked it

Thank you Malcom. Wonderful write-ups on the music and I am very glad you appreciated my choice. I think it could have a certain appeal to some "psychonauts". I like its dreamy qualities and groove, and find the vocals when they do come beautiful. I did worry people might complain about the way it ends. It is an unusual track on its album that it takes so long before the vocals come in (which many might consider the pay-off), and then it sort of ends. Groove often is important to me, and I like how it shifts and changes, but despite not being very long, I could imagine many not being very patient when it starts. It has certain Krautrock-like qualities think Can and Neu! as does a lot of my favourite 90s up music. The band is reminiscent of ones that got started in the 90s like Stereolab (Dots and Loops similarities on that album with bleeps and bloops), Pram and Broadcast. |

Thanks Nickie, I chose this song, as conventional as it may seem, since the flowing melodic adventure struck me as one of the most delightful songs I had heard for some time.

Bonny Light Horseman - "Bonny Light Horseman" Love the sauntering plodding of course, and acoustic guitar, this is awesome. Vocals are pure and captivating. The album is fantastic too. Aside and a separate project, they did a great version of Tim Buckly’s “Buzzin Fly”. Nice! This ones def a contender for me so far Vanishing Twin - "Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life Hypnotic and sensory stimulating. I really love this track Greg. It has so many subtle elements and a fine production. Gaupa - "Where Emperors Grow Why are there so many excellent Scandinavian bands out there? It is quite amazing how I find myself drawn to them more than any other worldly locations, musically wise. Good track and the movement is powerful enough and yet not overwhelming. Jonathan Hulten - "A Dance in the Road" He has such a good tone and engages my ear and makes me want to listen on and play it over and over. A good minds eye story and it journey along. Beautiful in its overall sound. Roberto Vecchioni – "Vorrei" Excellent intro before going into the main story. The lyrics were passionate of course and the song overall very enjoyable. Bijelo Dugme - "Tako ti je mala moja kad ljubi bosanac What a fresh change to listen to this and of course trying not to compare the music with western European music of the time. I had never heard of these guys and they have an interesting repertoire going from Rock to Prog to New Age. The Comet is Coming - "Summon the Fire" Reedy and dirty, its a great opening and then the drums come in and the song develops. I like the sound of what people are doing with jazz these days and I would go watch these guys live if I had the chance
Kuunatic - "Titian" Interesting band, and interesting merge of musical genres. I found another video with the lyrics which were quite imaginative and of course dreamy and mystical. Enjoyed this one a lot and more so after a few listens. Spencer Cullum's Coin Collection - "My Protector" Thoughtful and bluesy start. The vocal comes in and arty and captivating. I was not expecting the vocals so made for an even more enjoyable experience first time around. Reminded me of a story I was reading recently about a person collecting pennies for 45 years in 5 gallon water jugs. Le Grand Sbam - "Vaisseau Monde" This was an exciting track and one to stimulate the senses for sure. Vocally as much as instrumentally/electronically. I enjoyed the dark whimsical theme. Freestyle live performance is where this would be something you would get addicted going to watch. Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band - "A Wizard of the World" A really nice find. Great feel to this from the start and what a pulsing sound. Nice spacey feel and fuzzy guitar. Fausto - "Como um Sonho Acordado" I managed to find the English translation of the lyrics out there and enjoyed listening along reading them after my first initial listen without them. I like the story and it was more like an extended sonnet Battlestations – "Silencer" This one had me wading through (enjoyable) sludge for 3 mins before releasing me into the anticipated song. Enjoying the production and placement of sounds a LOT. The strings compliment and electronics well and I feel like the song is telling some kind of industrial story. So far I have 4 or 5 in mind and will whittle them down shortly. |
