Indeed, for Luis each element in the picture represents a specific idea, to the point that each track is characterized by one of these elements:

TIL that this iconic cover art (which I like to refer to as the Crying Plunger Guy) for the first Almendra album was drawn by Luis Alberto Spinetta himself. Fascinating.

^ That's correct David. The label wasn't happy with the initial sale numbers, and they split the package in two. A friend of mine is the proud owner of both volumes of the original cassette issue, now a sought-after rarity.

^ Thanks. Thumbs Up

I've added the 'Almendra en Obras' double live album from 1980 as two individual LPs, since they were packaged in individual jackets with different cover photos and catalogue numbers. The two discs were apparently sold together in the first instance though.

Non mi svegliate ve ne prego
ma lasciate che io dorma questo sonno,
c'è ancora tempo per il giorno
quando gli occhi si imbevono di pianto,
i miei occhi... di pianto.

I'm not sure if Proto has the same standards as Related, where the group in question must pass through the halls of a valid subgenre first (and be rejected) before being considered, but let's finally look at them at PSIKE and see what's up. As it is, I keep thinking they've been added each time this thread gets resurrected and it's been screwing with my head for a few years now.

From their reunion 1980 studio album, a song more on the Fusion/Crossover side of prog events:

Hello again, I've expanded the bio in the OP with more detail concerning connections with other acts in the local prog scene, and some insight on their general historical influence. Let's see what you think!

Nobody linked A Estos Hombres Tristes yet?

IMO it's their most prog-like song and probably the only one that can be clearly labeled as proto-prog or even full fledged prog folk or crossover prog. B)

Innovative structure ✔
Harmonic complexity ✔
Time signature changes ✔
Dynamic tension building ✔
Flashy solos ✔
Virtuosic instrumental performance (especially the bass) ✔

Here they sound pretty psychedelic to me:

With a more heavy riffage, hard-hitting guitar solo, and jazzy flavor in the vocals:

there doesn't appear to have been much interest from psych.  One person said proto, and the others were silent.  I'll see what Greg thinks

Their 2nd album (Almendra II) has been pointed out as the most psychedelic one.
