As a long time Zep Bootie, I think my personal favorite is Seattle 1975.   Central Park NY 1969 also great, and L.A. 1972.

Zeppelin's biggest complaint about bootlegs was the quality & price, so I'm not surprised Page wanted to adjust HtWwW.   But yeah, we want the real thing and in order of performance.

Good point about the Dead, but they're a different animal ...better recordings and the Dead's levels were compatible with private recordings.

Hi,

Thanks. This is a tough area, because the majority of the folks have no idea what was in those bootlegs and how they "felt" at all ... and sadly, many folks think that it was bad, but then, I never heard a single complaint about the Grateful Dead ... and folks were allowed to plug into their sound board!!!

The one thing that really bothered me, was when Jimmy put together "How the West Was Won" and it was based on three bootlegs, around a series of shows in LA, and Bonzo's birthday, if I am not mistaken. Those three bootlegs were the last great bootlegs that I remember and have heard, but the sad thing is that Jimmy screwed up the boots by making changes and adjust "mistakes" so it would come back better ... and in the end, he took the feel out of the bootlegs and the CD, for me, was really poor, and some energy was missing, and obviously cut up. At the time I had the boots, so when I heard that album ... I really lost a lot of respect for the band and what was done ... and while I appreciated some of their work, it was not ever going to get the appreciation that the early material had.

One of the saddest things I have ever seen done to some music. It would have been better to remaster the bootleg and release it ... it would be funny to see if someone was going to sue the band and say that bootleg came from his hand .... you and I would laugh on this one for sure!

But to mess with the concert material itself ... was bad ... really bad, mistakes or not, something that 95% of us probably can't tell at all, anyway!

Hi,

There is only one thing I would like to have, and listen to ... the long versions of "Dazed and Confused" ... though there is one that I heard on a bootleg (Live on Blueberry Hill) that has it and I think it is about 15/20 minutes long, but I don't have that anymore and it was gone at a time that I was in dire straits and needed the extra dollars. Seeing this mentioned in the blurb about the new film, is neat, and it really has my mind flying all over the place, and hearing that one version was over 30 minutes long!

There are too many great things, but I think I am more attuned to the first and second albums. They have an energy that you can hear on those early bootlegs that is nowhere near so much of the live crap released elsewhere by other bands. Some folks don't like the quality of the albums since some were done on a small cassette player (for example) and tough to listen to, but if the only important thing in them was the energy and you didn't catch it, then you would not be interested. Without that energy, I don't think the band would have been as important and valuable as it was to so many folks all over the world.

The Battle of Evermore
Four Sticks
The Song Remains the Same
Rain Song
Ten Years Gone
The Rover
Achilles Last Stand
Tea for One
Wearing and Tearing
Darlene

All three of the "Out Door" outtakes on Coda are better than anything on that actual awful slab. They must've let Robert pick the songs selection for ITtOD.

Obviously, with so many more great songs, the list could change daily. Naturally, the live versions are sometimes even better, such as Since I've Been Loving You and SRTS.
...that moment you realize you like "Mob Rules" better than "Heaven and Hell"

This is one topics that I so wish had the Paul treatment with tallying up the votes.

I don't often quote myself unless quoting someone who quoted me, but

Carouselambra

Rain Song, The
Tangerine
Ten Years Gone
Thank You

I guess I changed since 2021 since know I like to rank and tally things more. It's not like I treat it as a very serious or definitive list and raking.

So using the same songs:

1. Carouselambra
2. Ten Years Gone
3. Thank You
4. Four Sticks
5. In the Light
6. In the Rain Song
7. No Quarter
8. Misty Mountain Hop
9. Tangerine
10. Dazed and Confused

Or something like that, and might do a different set of songs later. I gotta whole lotta love for Zepp even if it is not something I have listened to very much since being a teenager. For years I would have said that my two favourite bands are Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

Bron-Yr-Aur (Physical Graffiti)
Dazed & Confused (I>TSrtS live version)
No Quarter (Houses of the Holy>TSRtS live version)
Over the Hills and Far Away (Houses of the Holy)
Since I`ve Been Loving You (III>TSRtS live version)
Stairway to Heaven (IV>TSRtS live version)
Tangerine (III)
The Battle of Evermore (IV)
The Song Remains the Same (Houses of the Holy>TSRtS live version)
Whola Lotta Love (II>TSRtS live version)

Most of the songs included in the live album "The Song Remains the Same" take on a vitality and energy superior to the studio versions.

How to choose?

Rain Song
Achilles Last Stand
Going to California
Ramble On
Immigrant Song
No Quarter
Good Times Bad Times
When the Levee Breaks
Fool in the Rain
Since I've Been Loving You

Could have picked many others.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I'd like to amend my previous selections with further choices and commentary:

Black Mountainside (thank you, Bert Jansch)
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You (thank you, Anne Bredon)
Heartbreaker (the greatest sloppy lead of all time)
Since I've Been Loving You (for Bonham's squeaky foot pedal)
Gallows Pole (Jimmy on banjo!)
Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp (hey, who doesn't love a song about a dog?)
Hey, Hey What Can I Do? (why this isn't on LZIII is mystifying)
Black Dog (that riff)
Battle of Evermore (and Sandy Denny)
When the Levee Breaks (the very definition of "progressive blues")
The Rain Song (beautiful composition)
Over the Hills and Far Away (the acoustic intro)
In My Time of Dying (because Blind Willie Johnson, Part 1)
In the Light (JPJ's best turn on the synth)
Bron-Yr-Aur (perhaps Page's best acoustic composition)
Ten Years Gone (A song I never get bored of)
The Wanton Song (John Bonham, 'nuff said)
Achilles Last Stand (did I mention John Bonham?)
Nobody's Fault But Mine (because Blind Willie Johnson, Part 2)
Travelling Riverside Blues (Robert Johnson, of course)

...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined
to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...

Live from Uzbekistan - The Orchestral Kashmir. My favourite song from the Physical Graffiti album.
