    Posted: August 01 2023 at 11:57
I do prefer the topics commonly when it comes to music that aren't just about Prog as so many of my favourites are not Prog, and even a lot of what I like and is in PA is not what a Prog purist would want to acknowledge as Prog. Of course there is plenty of room for both, but I see so many Prog list type topics being revived rather than those in General Music Discussions -- nothing wrong with that, but I just am not big on that Prog/ non-Prog divide, which is nebulous/ amorphous anyway. Very fuzzy, artificial and subjective boundaries.

Most of what I like that is classified Prog here might well generally be labelled something other than Prog first by audiences outside of PA. And most of what I like of recent/ modern music is not in PA. I've long thought that if a band call itself Prog it is not so likely to be for me. But I like a lot of Prog umbrella music. From the last decade included in PA, I guess Swans and Anna von Hausswolff have particularly prominent places in my heart, and Susanne Sundfør is great as is the music of the past by Klaus Morlock and Kosmischer Laufer.

Here I include one album per artist and all are included in PA, David Bowie is in Prog Related, but Blackstar is in my progressive rockiverse. I was going to have a Chelsea Wolfe album who is mostly approved for Crossover, although I know that is not a traditional kind of Prog act and could be controversial, but instead I will stick with ones in PA. I mostly feel the need to care about the Prog boundaries for various site business. Good thing we can discuss all types of music at PA. :)

2019: Cisnienie - JazzArt Underground
2018: Klaus Morlock - The Three Faces of Janice
2017: Yolk - Solar
2016: David Bowie - Blackstar
2015: Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous
2014: Swans - To Be Kind
2013: Kosmischer Läufer - Volume One
2012: Susanne Sundfør - The Silicone Veil
2011: North Sea Radio Orchestra - I a Moon
2010: Univers Zero - Clivages

Yet again, some very hard decisions here have led to lots of runners up and several ties:

2010: Lover's End by Moon Safari & The Way by Anima Mundi (We're Here Because We're Here by Anathema, Legacy by Hypnos 69)
2011: As Far as the Eye Can See by Sunchild (Snowtorch by Phideaux & Grace for Drowning by Steven Wilson)
2012: Viljans Öga by Änglagård & English Electric (Part One) by Big Big Train
2013: The Raven That Refused to Sing (and Other Stories) by Steven Wilson (The Mountain by Haken)
2014: L'Enigma della Vita by Logos (I'm in Your Mind Fuzz by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, City of the Sun by Seven Impale)
2015: Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise by The Dear Hunter (Until All the Ghosts Are Gone by Anekdoten, Hand. Cannot. Erase. by Steven Wilson)
2016: Blackstar by David Bowie / Nonagon Infinity by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard / Stranger Heads Prevail by Thank You Scientist (Warm Spaced Blue by Ingranaggi Della Valle)
2017: Polygondwanaland by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (From Silence to Somewhere by Wobbler)
2018: A Drop of Light by All Traps on Earth
2019: Echoes from Within Dragon Island by Karfagen (Grand Tour by Big Big Train, In Cauda Venenum by Opeth)
2020: Dwellers of the Deep by Wobbler
I use they/them pronouns (feel free to ask me about this!)

Check out my music on my bandcamp!

Are you serious? I didn't know this album, so I'm listening to it right now. Sure, it's better than their first two albums, but best album of the year it is not!! (for me, at least) And it is not prog!

In the same vein (and the same year), I much prefer Massive Attack's Heligoland. Still not prog, but I love the overall atmosphere.

Anyway, thanks for the discovery. Wink

I must be getting old too then, seeing as the only list where I knew all the bands was yours. Wink

It's a good sign if Psycho does know the bands you list, it means they're from the last 30 years of music.

I'm old, but have heard many of the bands listed. Those I don't know that are not "out-there avant stuff" I will be checking out. So thanks to all posts. Thumbs Up
