Actually, Pink Floyd is composed of the names of two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. It is a very good name.

other good names that are non-prog are the Flaming Lips, The Unicorns, the Arcade Fire, The Go! Team, Elbow, Stabbing Westward, and Supergrass.

Bad band name(and bad band): Simple Plan

KC, but if I'd noticed Hatfield at the bottom I'd have voted for them (whoops! ). I don't know why people not from the UK like that as a name, but that's cool anyway

I thought it was Mark Lenard.

I stand corrected....Marc Daniels was a director of several episodes (I think)...Well at least someone read my post

BTW: I voted Hatfield and the North.

Does anyone know how Spock's Beard got their name?

This is from SB's official website:

Where does the name "Spock's Beard" come from?
From a 1999 Music Street Journal interview
Neal: "Al and I were having this really weird night out one night, just one of those bizarro David Lynch type evenings. Al said "wow, it's like we're in a parallel universe. It's like Spock has a beard. Wouldn't that be a funny name for a band, Spock's Beard." That was about 89 or 90. Then when we were choosing names, around 92, Al made this list, like 2 pages of names. We all voted on them. He snuck Spock's Beard in as a joke, and it won. Then we were all like, are we going to commit to being known as Spock's Beard for all eternity, hopefully? Especially our first album, The Light, is kind of like music from a parallel universe. It's pretty out there, so that was part of it, too."

So it's not from dr. Spock, the famous child expert. He did have a beard though:

I agree with that, teh psychedelic bands were very good at names, even the more commercial acts like the 1910 Fruit Company.

Other great band names:

Quicksilver Messenger Service

The New Riders Of The Purple Sage...

There aren't many people on this forum who know Sweet Smoke, I guess.

I did see that Progarchives has Sweet Smoke on their band list. I never considered the band Prog, they are the epidemy of Psychadelic noodling but then I can see a relation to the spacy edge of Gong. So yes by all means it can be prog.

The Darkness to light album is very Psychadelic folk indeed and is a complete opposite of their other two albums Just a poke and Live. Great band, a real pity they did not last longer.

The "From the happy Pipe" was dropped real fast from the Sweet Smoke name...my brother actually saw them live  lucky dog.

Yes some great additions to the psuchadelic band names...sure some more will turn up. Its cool that the Jam bands are catching on to this element, Like Widespread Panic, String cheese Incident, etc....

Another Great name of prog is OZRIC TENTACLES

I think i gotta go with DreamtTheater. Theres something about it that is very ...hmm idono. But theres something that makes me go "yeyeyeyagurgleygurlghggMMEEE" on the inside
I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

My fave has got to be Subarachnoid Space; it is a fitting name for the band, with a double meaning which is always a plus for a prog band.

Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase

Universal Indians

His Name Is Alive (though not really prog)

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is a great name,

as is the Secret Chiefs 3 for the Masonic overtones.

Better than this: "Matching Mole" - which is "machine mole" (Soft Machine in French) with a Brittish accent.

My vote goes to Procol Harum, which was a cat's name, and I love cats!

machine mole is still machime mole with a british  accent!

Well, Sleeper, I once read that Robert Wyatt gave this explanation for the name of his band!

I had to go with Dream Theater. What a nice name.

But Spock's Beard, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and Uriah Heep are great names too. I also like the sounds of Gentle Giant and Mr Bungle.
