Will vote for Dead Can Dance, this album is a recent discovery. Aqualung's highlights are as good as anything but the album as a whole is a bit uneven. I gave the Comus album only one shot and it didn't convince me, maybe I should try again.

I know them all by heart though it may be a decade since I last listened to Aqualung and perhaps five years since First Utterance last was spun. Spleen and Ideal however I listened to earlier this week. So as my current favorite it felt like the natural choice.

Thanks. Here is "Winter is a Coloured Bird" "All the Colours of Darkness" (wonderful) And "In the Lost Queen's Eyes" Music of such quality that I would expect with another band for this not just to be bonus tracks. As for To Keep From Crying, which I don't know if you've heard, the songs "Children of the Universe" and "To Keep From Crying" are particular favourites of mine. That is a much reviled album by many who are into First Utterance and an album that is ignored (not listened to/ unknown) by many who disdain Comus for First Utterance. I do like the album Out of the Coma very much too even if I have called it Comus-by-numbers before (cashing in on the later found success of First Utterance). I do think it a shame that Comus didn't find more success early on and I do find First Utterance to be a remarkable album ("The Herald" being the initial stand-out for me but coming to love the whole album). By the way, I wonder how many who have voted have heard all three albums in the poll? Edited by Logan - February 07 2021 at 07:52 |

They produced 2 lps, the first 'Mr Fox' in 1970 and the second 'The Gipsy' in 1971 then split in '72. They were much more 'Baroque' in their approach to Folk rock and the instrumentation used. They were an unpredictable entity live, at times outstanding, at times chaotic (bands like VDGG, Hawkwind and many others that utilized that spark of chaotic creativity suffered the same fate) and were dismissed because they were NOT like Steeleye Span or Fairport convention, clean in sound and predictable live. They originated from North Yorkshire and much of the strangeness and eerie nature of their sound comes from the folk tradition in that part of the world. They adopted the name Mr Fox, which was the title of their signature song, based on a bloody English folk tale - a version of the Bluebeard legend - in which a young woman outwits a serial killer.

As good as the other two albums are, Aqualung is a 5 star masterpiece.

Out of these three it has to be Comus..
Aqualung is a truely fantastic lp but more rock than folk IMHO. My personal folk prog favourite is this- ![]() Bob and Carole Pegg's 'Mr Fox'

I have loved all three, and my first inclination was to get into the Progressive Folk merits of each album, but instead I’ll just commment in a different way on my appreciation. First thought was First Utterance, which to me is one of the absolute Acid Folk and Freak Folk greats (often my favourite kind of folk), but that Dead Can Dance album is brilliant and is the one that I would most like to play again right now, and am. Worked as a perfect musical suggestion for me right now. By the way, not that I would expect this to be the choice, I prefer the compilation Song to Comus.... to First Utterance, which includes FU. Not only do I love the bonus tracks, and Winter is a Coloured Bird might be my favourite Comus song, but I am one of those who genuinely appreciates To Keep From Crying, and that together with the bonus tracks and FU really works well for me as a package.
A nice eclectic poll with three albums that are classics in their own right. |

Three great albums, I'll pick Comus today but could easily be any of them.

If I could only keep one it would be 'Aqulaung' for the diversity of rock, folk, and prog but it's not really a folk lp imho as pointed out already.
'Spleen and Ideal' is my second favorite DCD after Realm...and again not sure how folky it truly is by definition of folk. 'First Utterance' is one of those things that is an acquired taste though it is certainly unique and is prog folk. While the original vinyl is worth some big bucks the music doesn't match up to those levels imho. Edited by dr wu23 - February 06 2021 at 13:19 |

Aqualung, even though there's hardly any folk in it.

Wow! Thanks for that! Never heard of them or this music. Great story, too. The music is intense, unique, and very polished! From fast ("Everybody Knows") to slow and delicate ("I Was"), the arrangements are just perfect! And so intimate and personal. Wow! I'm, like, in tears! I love the tension-building Jacques Brel feel of "There'll Be No Clowns Tonight." The timing of their vocal harmonies couldn't be more locked in/synchronized. Remarkable! Thanks, Freide, for another great recommendation rescued out of obscurity! P.S. the whole time listening to this amazing album I was racking my brain to place the voice of one of the ladies. It's Sonja Kristina! (Before there was a Sonja Kristina.) "Melt Me" finally gave it away--and could a song be more predictive of the whole Curved Air vibe?
