I never liked the live version of The Knife , especially that bloody whistle , Collins is like an overgrown kid on that! Although you are correct that a log of Genesis live versions of songs are similar to the studio , i think the addition of an extra drummer on certain sections makes a massive difference. Especially Cinema Show and One For The Vine. Also the linking of certain tracks ie Dance on a Volcano/ Los Endos , In The Cage/Slipperman medley/Afterglow as well as the Duke suite also helped create a better flow imo.

Not impressed with the Windy City 1978 Live CD as mentioned in the thread earlier. It's a total bootleg and NOT the the radio broadcast . Almost unlistenable. A stark contrast to the ELP 2 CD set from Wheeling, West Virginia (same year) which is immaculate and probably the best ELP live recording I've ever heard, especially from the 70's. The Genesis one is so obviously someone in the audience with a tape machine.

^Yeah I have to agree. There certainly is a difference in energy, and I understand liking a live version slightly more than a studio track, or comparing one live rendition to another in terms of execution and sound quality. But I tend to only be into live recordings if they are significantly different than the studio recordings. Zappa is a gold mine with all the ZFT releases, especially when some tracks were only ever played live.
Any groups that use a heavy amount of improvisation tend to grab me much more when it comes to live recordings. That or changing up the arrangement, or adding new parts. GG often did that, and, again, Zappa was king in that regard, reimagining tunes from a decade before to fit a new line-up and to stifle the boredom. He was way better live. Now, I wish I could have BEEN THERE when Genesis was playing, because the allure for me would have been the spectacle of it all. The closest thing I can get now is The Musical Box tribute group, and they do a fantastic job.

"The Knife" followed by "The Return of the Giant Hogweed". The rest of the live tracks are in my opinion more or less forgettable. Genesis live tracks stick too close to the studio tracks for my taste. That's not what I expect from live tracks.

Oops! Found it on Amazon, and they only want $100 for it (a two disc CD). Shucks. By the way, what's the track listing on In The Windy City?

I do love Genesis live. For me most of their songs are better live than the originals. Going with the ones I do like better live:
1. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight (Live at the Rainbow). 2. The Musical Box (Genesis Live). 3. The Cinema Show (Live at the Rainbow). 4. I know what I like (Seconds Out). 5. In the Cage (Live over Europe). 6. The Knife (Genesis Live). 7. Mama (Live over Europe). 8. Home by the Sea / Second home by the Sea (The Way we walk). 9. Land of Confusion (Live over Europe). 10. Duchess (Three Sides Live). |
