Haha, I calculated the ranking of all the songs because this was after all what the creator of this thread, Father Christmas, had intended. It was just a fun thing to do, and one should not take it too seriously. For those who care, it does help to show which songs from an artist/band appear the most appreciated within the Prog Archive community (or at least those who participate), which is perhaps a fairly representative microcosm of prog listeners generally. For those who don't care, no harm done.

Ranking?! You are the only one thinking about it.
Just list 10 songs you enjoy/love.

that's what I did ;-)

yes you did, but you were worried about rankings which in this case, you should not. Smile

Lots of people have been ranking their choices from 1 to ten, and it started off with listing your choices in order of preference and having the OP tabulating the results -- the OP has been gone for over a year -- and Paul took over, and of course PhilChem's contribution.

I too often prefer not to rank my choices and instead just list them in any order (often preferring not to make sport of art -- not having these things as games or sort of contests).

EDIT: I do have a number one in this case, and it is Blood on the Rooftops.

My list, and I will rank them this time even if I could easily change the order and some listings:

1. Blood on the Rooftops
2. Ripples
3. Entangled
4. One for the Vine
5. Squonk
6. Los Endos
7. Mad Man Moon
8. Deep in the Motherlode
9. Dance on a Volcano
10: Burning Rope

I see I posted on here a while ago. While I still stand behind my top ten, "man of our times" is one that has grown on me. I've also always liked "man on the corner" although it's not quite a top tenner for me. Others that don't quite make it for me are:

Down And Out
Follow You Follow Me
Silver Rainbow
Mama
Congo
Fading Lights
Misunderstanding
Turn It On Again (although it could make my top ten now or at least maybe number 11)
Duchess (not sure how it didn't make my initial top ten but it probably would now)
Tonight, Tonight, Tonight (this was played to death on the radio but I really like the middle part especially)

I thought it was time to have another tally for this poll and since Father Christmas does not seem to be around (I hope he is doing well!), I took it upon myself to do the math, which admittedly has left me with a slight headache. I was as careful as possible, but any one is welcomed to check in case there are any doubts. A few minor caveats to consider first:

- It was agreed in some cases that two tracks would count as one (i.e. Unquiet slumbers/In that quiet earth, Duke's travels/Duke's end, Home by the sea 1&2). This may have given these tracks an advantage as some voters seem to be voting just for one or the other of the two, but generally this should not have played an important factor

- Psychedelic Paul originally voted only for 3 songs, but later named all the tracks from ATOTT plus Your Own Special Way and Follow You, Follow Me, without providing a ranking. So I only included his 3 top songs, but it would be easy to adjust if he decided to rank his top 10

- A FlowerKingCrimson included 11 songs by squeezing in two songs at #5 (nice try J), so I ignored his last song

- Rednight provided a list organized from 1-10, but said these were not necessarily in order of preference. However, I counted them as if they were in order of preference as I could see no other way to include them.

So, here are the best post-Peter Gabriel Genesis songs and their scores according to the educated tastes of 33 ProgArchives voters (I thought it would be interesting to see the songs beyond just the top 10, so it’s a top 20 list):

1. One for the Vine - 328 (very appropriate title for the #1)

2. Dance on a Volcano – 290

3. Ripples – 253

4. Entangled – 216

5. Blood on the Rooftops – 198

6. Los Endos – 173

7. Mad Man Moon – 172

8. Eleventh Earl of Mar – 155

9. Duke’s Travels/Duke’s End – 141

10. Mama – 138

11. Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers/In That Quiet Earth – 136

12. Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea – 135

13. Squonk – 114

14. Burning Rope – 75

15. Down and Out - 71

16. Afterglow – 69

17. Behind the Lines – 66

18. Heathaze – 62

19. Dodo/Lurker – 60

20. Undertow – 47

Bubbling under are Turn it on Again (46) and Domino (44).

A few observations. While it is not surprising that the highest scoring tracks are from the first two post-Gabriel albums, since this is after all a prog site, many if not most voters also included songs from Genesis’ more mainstream periods in their top 10. In all, 55 songs received at least one mention in a top 10 list, including all from ATOTT, W&W and ATTWT, most from Duke and Abacab, and several from Genesis and Invisible Touch. I think only one track from their last album received a vote: Congo from Calling All Stations.

People may be familiar with the top 10 list of Genesis songs compiled by Prog Magazine (The 10 Best Genesis Songs – voted for by Prog readers | Louder (loudersound.com), supposedly voted by 40,000 readers. Interestingly, the only two post-Gabriel songs that made that list are Ripples (at #9) and Dance on a Volcano (at #10), which seems pretty consistent with our little poll, with the important exception of One for the Vine coming in first (incidentally my #1 as well J).

Moribund the Burgermeister, Mother of Violence, I Don't Remember, etc. Maybe no one really cares about that music.

you know, you can start that discussion, create a poll or a thread, or is it you want someone else to do it for you? Ermm

Admittedly I've never listened enough to any album post-W&W/Hackett, to really to have really gotten a whole lot of the songs under my skin. I "like" 80's genesis and own most of the albums as well (up to and including their self-titled), but I never actually choose to listen to them. My only recollection of Abacab is that "Keep it Dark"-video and I remember thinking that Jude Law must get the role as Phil Collins if they ever made a biopic or a "Bohemian Rhapsody/Rocket Man"-styled Genesis-movie. So no real surprises here I suppose...

Dance On A Volcano
One For The Vine
Home By the Sea/Second Home By the Sea
Entangled
Los Endos
Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers...
That's All
Mama
Eleventh Earl Of Mar
...In That Quiet Earth

Love Gabriel's solo stuff. Melt is a masterpiece through and through, and So has a lot of emotional replay value for me.
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

What I'm wondering is, if there were a post-Hackett version of this thread rather than just post-Gabriel, would people put in the entirety of ATTWT before even considering Land Of Confusion, or That's All?

I love both Heathaze and Please Don't Ask.

The former has an achingly yearning chorus that really sees Collins step into his own as a dramatic balladeer, with a lyric I cannot forget: "the trees and I are shaken by the same wind, but whereas the trees will lose their withered leaves, I just can't seem to let them loose..." Powerful.

The latter shows an early example of Phil's excellent knack for writing about failed relationships, and especially for embodying someone who knows things have gone bad and sincerely wishes to make them right again, but just doesn't know how. It's the resignation of knowing things won't change juxtaposed with the desperation for something better, plus Rutherfords sexy guitar licks painting a new warm color in Genesis' often icy canvas.

Maybe we should rename you Sacro-Pop then 😁. Good reflections on Phil Collins. He certainly has a knack but I still prefer the writing of Banks and Rutherford generally. Why Banks could not come up with better material as a solo artist is a mystery to me.

Ha! That's fair enough. For what it's worth, it was the prog era that made me first take a real interest in Genesis, though I had known their pop hits for many years. I just happened to discover that I quite like every era of this band, just the players and the kinds of music they like to make. One of my absolute favorites!

I don't understand your comment. First of all, almost all tracks in this poll are from the 70's. See on page 3 for the last top 10 :

1 Dance On Volcano 242
2 One for the Vine 216
3 Blood On the Rooftops 178
4 Los Endos 163
5 Ripples 148
6 Eleventh Earl Of Mar 140
7 Entangled 133
= Mad Man Moon 133
9 Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers...In That Quiet Earth 120
10 Duke's Travels 114

Maybe we could update this top someday...

And I love Genesis from the 70's, but also some tracks from the 80's and 90's. Same thing for the Peter Gabriel solo stuff!

And... I also love many Nino Ferrer songs! Wink

Actually it seems many of the top songs overall are from the late 70s but I for one like a lot of Gabriel solo stuff and would be happy if someone started a discussion on that.
