Well judging by the Live At Budokan documentary they feel fine about being identified as prog.

None of those are in bold...
And Metallica produced more prog than Iron Maiden or Kansas... they certainly progressed the genre of metal more than any other band ever, apart from, arguably, Black Sabbath.
Therefore Metallica are prog (at least, their first 5 albums are).

I think I read an interview where James LaBrie said that he'd rather DT be called a hard rock band with progressive elements. That to me shows they are underplaying the prog element, and I personally feel it shows in the music that they are more influenced by heavy metal/rock, really.

I believe you are correct but that in essence they want to be a prog band (and are of course!).I know a couple of metal fans and they both hate prog so the association to prog does no favours for them.

I don't think that you should
take what they DIDN'T say and interpret it as them saying that they
aren't prog. I notice that it doesn't say anywhere in your quote that
he's talented, either. just "respected" and "legendary". does this mean
that Petrucci is a bad/mediocre guitarist? no. maybe they just aren't
familliar with the term "prog". most of the people I know weren't until
they met me. I think you're making too big a deal about it.

Quite right.
Dream Theater are not prog.
I'm having a hard job identifying them as metal either - what an insult to metal fans everywhere.
They're more like the FM rock bands of the late 1970s mid 1980s but with flashier guitars. Journey on steroids, you might say. REO Speedwagon meets Joe Satriani?

They are metal, thus they can be called metal. Most people aren't familiar with the term "prog metal", thus public magazines call them metal. No one denies that they're prog, of course they are

why, isn't dream theater a metal band after all? isn't petrucci a metal guitarist? Just because in the ad they forgot to say "prog" doesn't mean they don't think Dream Theater are actually prog...

Um. No.
I am a huge metal fan, I listen to anything from Emperor to Velvet
Cacoon to Savatage to Wormed. I love Progressive rock/metal. Well,
typically only Neo-prog rock but ...
ontothe topic of discussion here.
Dream Theater are a progressive rock band more than anything, even with
their later releases being a bit heavier, well Train of Thought being
almost all metal. They are basically going to be Prog. because they
stole their basic song structuring from Rush >_>

No mention of prog at all, just metal. Given that this release would have had to get approval from Petrucci, does this mean that, whatever we think on this site, Dream Theater DON'T think they're prog or don't want to acknowledge it? That's my interpretation.

What makes you think that DT had to give approval to this? |
Believe you me, if a major artist does a personal appearance, their management will want ALL publicity vetted and approved to the ninth degree before it goes out or else there is no way it will happen.

It's probably just a marketing strategy to appeal to potential fans who'd be turned off by the "prog" label.
