the humor of movies like "Dumb and Dumber" completely fails to entertain me. I couldn't watch the movie for more than 20 minutes

The Big Lebowski. I saw Dumb and Dumber on the big screen and laughed out loud once or twice (I was also slightly surprised that Red Right Hand was included in the soundtrack), but it really doesn't stand up to repeated viewing. I don't remember laughing out loud at The Big Lebowski, but I enjoyed every minute of it and I might watch it again this week as it's been a while since I revisited The Dude.

I know what you mean, and I haven't actually seen The Jesus Rolls yet and have read that The Big Lebowski is actually not the biggest influence on it, but is instead Going Places from 1974. I doubt that I would like it near as much as The Big Lebowski, which I love. I listened to a podcast in 2019 comparing The Big Lebowski to Pulp Fiction (even if not that comparable, more so than TBL and D&D -- Dumb and Dumber, not Dungeons and Dragons). https://www.verybadwizards.com/167

I love plenty of the Coen Bros films (and Tarantino films for the matter, who I was comparing the other day with someone I know).

In regards to Jim Carrey films, I hugely preferred Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show and Man on the Moon to Dumb and Dumber.

I recall Jeff Bridges starred with brother Beau Bridges in The Fabulous Baker Boys and he was also a distant cousin of Cantilever Bridges. Tongue

The Dude, easily. The mastery of the Coen brothers is behind it: script, direction, cinematography... are all on a much higher level than Dumb and Dumber

Confused  Bridges was already "made" in the early 70s; think of The Last Picture Show (1971), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and many other great films since that you might have forgotten...

Lebowski made Jeff Bridges.  Dumb and Dumber is a waste of Jeff Daniels. Lebowski easily.

I like Curb Your Enthusiasm, where Larry David often liked to remind people he was the writer of the Seinfeld show, especially when he was booking a table at a restaurant. Smile

The Big Lebowski, even though it wasn't that funny, although that's probably more to do with American humour not translating so well in England, especially in the case of Seinfeld - "the show about nothing" Smile

hate comedies that are based on the idiocies of people. I want my humour to be intelligent.

"The Big Lebowski" is on a completely different level, so my vote goes there.

I think Dumb and Dumber has a kind of "fortune favours the innocent dumb" vibe, and thus I see no real humiliation there. Otherwise I would hate it, I presume. It hurts me when I witness a real humiliation, even sometimes in the movies.
