no worries man...  the Spawn of Satan once said of me..  one of the few wise things.. as well as nicest things she said about me that wasn't X-rated.  'You take criticism better than anyone I've ever known... you simply ignore it and do what you want to do regardless of what anyone thinks..'

at least I think she meant it as a compliment... it was at least before she took the habit of throwing pots and pans at me when enraged as only a redheaded insatiable satantic-whorshipping material girl with a few anger issues can be..so it might have been in those first 6 months of knowing me.

so without further ado...  let's start the next one!!!

yeah.. I'd say the variety on this one topped the first.  And while I have you.. great suggestion you had. Loved the song.. and the video as quite adorable. You really got me interested in her and exploring her music.

Someone upstream mentioned it and when I was re-listening to her song earlier Raff mentioned the Bent Knee vocal similarity.  Once mentioned.. you can really hear it.

She has a range in vocals and styles. Her first album has more of a country blues vibe. First song I heard from her that got my attention was this one.

Yeah, I can hear the Bent Knee.

loved that!! Clap and seals the deal.  Going to snag whatever I can get from her album wise..

I would normally use the word commercial for something that is made for the sake of profit more than artistic expression. So in my world music can be catchy and accessible without necessarily being commercial.

So did you like it?

Well I had mixed feelings to listen to it, I was undecided whether to consider it good music or just a very commercial and enjoyable easy listening. Some passages reminded me of the electro-tango music that I danced, and that I liked, although obviously this song is not a tango.

I don't hear any tango whatsoever. But then again I do not know what electro-tango is and truth is it does not feel like something I'd be interested in.

Very commercial? A jazz song? Funny, I don't get it. People often use the term "commercial" as derogatory which in a lot of cases (the song I chose included) is undeserving.
Also if you ask me, there's no such thing as good music or bad music, it's just music we like and music we don't like, that simple.

Commercial music can be good or bad.
Misplaced Chlidhood is very commercial and it's a great prog album.
Suzanne Vega plays commercial folk music, Steely Dan commercial pop-jazz and I like them.
That song by Dan Mandrila is quite commercial, electric-pop-jazz I would say.

I think you are using the word "commercial" for something that is "accessible" or "catchy".
And like I said, many listeners (if not most) use the word "commercial" as something bad, awful. It never has a positive connotation.

Hi,

One of the things I always wanted to do on stage was to put on the COMPLETE ... Frankie Goes to Hollywood, although I would also use film for the backgrounds, and end up with a sort of "West Side Story" ... complete with a live band and dancers ... and offer a lot of nudity and give Micky an erection, and maybe even invite him to be in it ... so he can have some fun.

AND, we would have to do this a la "Marat/Sade", with a fence in the front and a row of folks sitting there representing the upper class buffoons that think that stuff like this is below their bathroom moments! And they have to get upset and ... you know the rest!

As one of the folks in "Marat/Sade" says ... "we're here to give these patients ... THERAPY." (SLIGHTLY PARAPHRASED) ... and we really need to do something bombastic to get attention, and that should get a few folks in the theater with their smartphones!

And the show ... would be here to give the audience some THERAPY"!

...
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

This is an example of electric-pop-tango:

Anyway, dear Christian, now I already have in mind a song by Guccini where the musical part and the arrangement are clearly predominant with respect to the lyrics, and I keep it in reserve for one of the next threads.Wink

I'm curious! Smile

But the criteria include this: "By non-prog, I mean you should avoid bands that are listed in the Prog Archives.". So I felt free to put it.

Ah, what an unlucky contest. I didn't vote for my song even if I was free to, and you didn't vote for this even if the song fit the criteria.

LOL

Thanks anyway. Embarrassed

Of course you were within your rights to do that... anyway, I have only given one vote yet. Can't decide between Forte, Bears, and Earth Wind and Fire for 2 and 3...
I think I take the easy way out... Bears have 3 votes, EW&F 2 and Forte none, so Forte and EW&F it is

Last time I voted for the most popular choices, this time for the outsiders.

I do like a lot of melancholy, thoughtful music, minor keys and all that.  Guess that sometimes comes with the territory.  I'll try and find someone yet alive for the next poll, maybe you'll like that choice as well, depending on what our parameters are.  :)

I can be very eclectic... and anyway it's 25% parameters and 75% pure unexplainable magic.

Thanks for the vote, Lewian. Also glad that you liked the song. This "game" is just for fun, losing is not a big issue for me. But I cannot lie, this vote has made me feel good. Star

Your contribution was not in my top three, but I enjoyed it, even though it might have a little bit more to do with celerity than with melody. A welcome addition to such a list imho .

Hmmm, yes, but you have voted for Phil Ochs, one of the American songwriters most similar to Guccini, and basically famous for his lyrics.
However, the songwriters are not born in Italy, but in France and Belgium, I speak of chansonniers such as Brel, Brassens, Ferrè. The Italians De André (here in PA as Prog-related, otherwise I would post some of his songs) and Guccini took from them and from Bob Dylan, who made the first three records only with guitar, voice and harmonica, all based on the lyrics. If we think about it, Desolation Row, taken from what is considered his folk rock masterpiece, Highway 61 revisited, has ten verses, is a flood river, sung from start to finish and lasts over 10 minutes. In reality, Guccini and De Andrè have never made such a threadbare song. After all, I also chose the Song of the usual questions because of the nostalgic and classical melody, not for the text. Anyway, dear Christian, now I already have in mind a song by Guccini where the musical part and the arrangement are clearly predominant with respect to the lyrics, and I keep it in reserve for one of the next threads.Wink
