Since being here, I would say Anathema has been my favorite discovery. Though some of my more favorite bands I discovered elsewhere (mostly through Amazon).

Don't worry it won't be long before you've spent a huge amount of money as a result of joining this forum. I don't think I could write a list of bands that I've discovered as a result of this forum as I'd get bored writing it.

YES and Genesis... can you imagine that! Also, Anglagard, PFM, Steve Hackett, Bacamarte, Camel, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Rush, Gentle Giant, VdGG, Soft Machine, Hidria Spacefolk, Muse, The Mars Volta, Leb I Sol, Harmonium, Godspeed You!Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros, etc. At strange as it may seem, there are parts of the civilized world where these bands are largely unknown!...

^ Bumping in recognition of my two years on ProgArchives.
These are bands I've discovered in that time which have really made an impression. Some of the are one-shot wonders, but still well worth seeking out:
A Silver Mt. Zion (an acquired taste but worth the trip)
After Crying (buy everything you can find – this stuff is timeless!)
Änglagård (breathtaking - except the live album which is only ‘exceptional’)
In the Labyrinth (a hidden gem of symphonic/folk world music from Sweden)
Isildur's Bane (they have their detractors, but I think these guys rank up there with Änglagård)
M.I.A. (a quintessential symphonic prog sound – wish they’d have hung around longer)
Carol of Harvest (one-shot wonder but an amazingly engaging piece of art)
Maneige (goes well with a dry autumn red wine)
Leviathan – U.S. (I actually had one of their former members contact me with a thanks for giving some history on them in a review a while back. I still don’t know why these guys didn’t get more exposure back when their only album was released – outstanding and energetic American symph rock).

Godspeed You! Black Emperor & Explosions In The Sky.
It was beyond my comprehension that Sigur Ros (which I discovered after much digging about what song played at the end of The Life Aquatic - and immediately bought Agaetis Byrjun) could be put into a genre. Apparently it was post-rock/experimental, so I checked out the other top bands in the genre.

Got to mention Salem Hill, Green Carnation, and Super Furry Animals. Probably the last time you'll see those three bands listed in the same sentence though  .

All in all, it's The Mars Volta as I've knows Genesis(my favorite band) before joining PA. TMV I descovered here and they've steadily climbed up to second spot in my all time favorites.
