I was sad and depressed. The best band to spring up in the last ten years had broken up.

And then Geordie releases "Holy Holy" and all is right in the world again.

What an amazing track!!! Now I'm happy again.

^ Yep, loved everything about Holy Holy. Somehow it sounds just as excpected and completely unexpected.

^ Geordie Greep's solo album The New Sound is scheduled for release 04 Oct 24. I have it on pre-order from Amazon UK. I absolutely love his new single Holy Holy.

August 20th has come and gone, and Geordie's big announcement is indeed concerning his own solo material. He has tours coming up this autumn across much of the UK and continental Europe, and the eastern US and Canada early next year, plus a fourth NYC show next month at the beautiful Sultan Room. And to hold us over he has given us his first solo single, which picks up right where his contributions to black midi have left off and will be featured on his first solo LP The New Sound.

Don;t want to hijack this because the examples one uses aren't that important to this black midi topic, but Nick Drake's and Portishead's music are so important to me.  Nick Drake's story has touched so many people, including myself who also has suffered from depression and suicidal ideation.  While music of his is sublime to me and I got into him before knowing his history, the story of Nick Drake himself makes the music all the more poignant. I only got into his music five or six years ago after seeing "River Man" compared to Comus' "The Herald" in an article.  There is a fragility to his music and melancholy that touches my proverbial soul and I know his music has touched many others and he has become better known since he got shared on the internet.  By the way, some will know his sister, actress Gabrielle Drake, who was in UFO amongst other things.  I've seen almost all of her... and that's just from one movie! ;)  As for Portishead, another band I go into late, but better late than ever.  While I adore "Teardrop" by Massive Attack (with the wonderful Elizabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins on vocals), Portishead overall is way more important to me.  Here's a lovely video that combines Portishead's Roads with Massive Attack's Teardrop.

I would think Portishead is the bigger name where I reside by the way.  Like Drake, it has three terrific albums.  And the Portishead live albums are great too.  Beth Gibbons (Portishead's singer) Lives Outgrown is so far my album of this year.

Here's hoping that black midi and Portishead release another album at some time (Portishead has released some great singles post Third).

Maybe. It was enough for Stooges, Nirvana, Nick Drake, Portishead, Jimi Hendrix... countless band have have three albums or less that really "counts", but are still considered essential/important in the history of rock/popular music. Sometimes a band reputation and importance grow bigger with time because they ended before the started releasing sub-par albums.

I don't own any albums by those bands but Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix virtually created a new genre of rock music while Portishead are definitely and have always been on my radar but not sure just how important they are truly. I get the feeling that Massive Attack not only overtook them but lapped them several times. Not a clue about Nick Drake other than the praise that his heaped on him. Does he 'best' someone like John Martyn for instance? I get the point that it still counts as a legacy whether it be one album and no more when considering the influence of the artist.
Whether Nick Drake bests John Martyn or not is beside the point (although he does for me personally). Same goes for you being indiffernt to most of my examples. I mentioned bands or artists with only three studio albums released (before someone died or they called it quits) that are important in the history of popular music, still listened to, influential for new generations of music listeners and aspiring musicians. Because of what you wrote in the first quote.

^ Nirvana didn't create grunge but they did popularize it to be the main musical genre of the 90s. Earlier bands that really started the grunge thing were Green River, Skin Yard, 64 Spiders, U-Men, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney and even Soundgarden all came before Nirvana. Technically Alice In Chains even got the party started with its Facelift album.

I'm not too sure Black Midi have done that much in that regards but then King Gizzard have released about 20 million albums and I'm not sure about their influence either Wink

BM's management shared an official statement with The Quietus today, confirming that the split was made "with the understanding the black midi door be left open". They will return when they are ready, willing, and able.

I hope black midi releases more albums.  I do think this band is something really special and it has already influenced many others.  Many bands became legendary with three albums or less (both in their specific genres, and to a greater extent).  black midi have already made a significant mark, and whether that project continues or gets revived or not, band members will continue to do other things that hopefully heighten its legacy.  That said, I don't care much about popularity in and of itself, but I would like more people to like more of the music I like selfishly so more such music gets made and more such music concerts occur locally.

Great band.

Well it will always be somewhat marginal, but a band like Black Midi have like four times more monthly listener than a conventional prog band like UK. It's all for a minority of passionate music lovers in the world. Most music outside the mainstream is.

I don't know if they have any bonus tracks to offer, but sure. Except I'm under no illusion that the world in 50 years will resemble our world very much, so then again maybe not. But that goes for the Close to the Edge 100th anniversary boxset as well. That it won't happen, I mean.

Doubt it. I wouldn't describe Frank Sinatra rapping with musical passages that are complex only to be complex and don't fit with the song, as reinventing anything. Decent musicians, though.

I followed the ersatz announcement of their breakup (which from what Geordie said on Instagram may just be an "indefinite hiatus"), the public nature of it seems to have blindsided Cameron and as a result he deleted his initial surprised reactions. The good news is that Cameron used the opportunity to announce the imminent sessions for a solo record with a "great band", so we should have something to look forward to.

And if - on the VERY off chance - this IS a ruse, we'll likely see something on the 20th of this month per Geordie, or else he'll maybe announce something of his own then. He's playing several NYC shows soon, I'll be seeing him at TV Eye.
