Pom Poko (prog related or crossover?)

But progressive rock is not a catch all term for all rock which is progressive (Sonic Youth was very forward thinking, were they not?). It's a tradition of rock music that began in the late-60s/early-70s, which journalists flatteringly called progressive because it was new at the time. But there were several derivative prog bands even then. Not that prog necessarily must be %100 retro. I think you'll find some of the most groundbreaking rock music being made today in "brutal prog." But it's clearly based in tropes of progressive rock. Pom Poko is not. Their experimentation is in the off-kilter and noisy guitar work, not the things that make prog prog. Hope that helps.

Also, prog-related is dedicated to bands who had influence on prog or had prog ties themselves. To my knowledge, Pom Poko doesn't, although it wouldn't surprise me if they did have ties to Rune Grammafon or something.

What about art rock then?

They have an experimental approach to their music, mixing different genres and testing boundaries. That's a progressive approach in my world (as in: progressive, opposed to conservative, stylistically pure, etc.).
